Making BIG laydowns in tournaments

I've made some really BIG laydowns in tournaments before when it gets close to crunch time. If the hand im in requires half my stack or more when its close to the payouts, i'll make laydowns w/ big hands. For instance: 23 people til the tourney pays out & i have pkt Qs....im in bad position & a guy raises all in for most my stack, another guy reraises all in in front of me also...i have to think im beat preflop but guess what, i wasn't. The 1st guy had A Q which i was dominating & the other guy had pkt Js. Even though i was pissed when the cards were revealed, i was sure happy that i folded such a big preflop hand when it was near payout time cause the board hit Kd Ah 3c...so i made a good BIG laydown in that case & saved my tournament life basically. I ended up placing 17th which payed me 20 times what i bought in for. It's hard making those kind of laydowns but you have to do them sometimes. Have any of you been in that kind of situation & what was it?

to make it deep you pretty much have to at some point.

I once folded pkt k's preflop after a raise, it was a 50 dollar buy in tourney so i really wanted to make the money. I know that was pretty weak play by me but guess what he had, pkt A's.

biggest lay down ive made is aa when half my stack in the middle when kk flopped was right fold but hard as hell to do

I think its OK to fold QQ in that situation because 2 players where already all-in and you would have had to call for most of your stack. Its a tough lay down but understandable. With QQ you certainly want to be heads up.
Against 2 players, you might even be behind. I once saw on TV in a wsop circuit event a player lay down QQ when 2 in front of him went all-in. It was, however, the final table, which probably changes things. He was right to fold because the 2nd guy (it was Joe Hachem) had kings. I still don't know if he folded because it was the final table or because you should with QQ if 2 players are all-in. They both make sense.

As far as folding KK, that I just can't do. I respect your decision Storm and I realize that you were right to fold, but I just can't do it. Combuboom explained in another thread that all-in raises in tourneys usually represent a wide range. After giving it some thought I now agree with it. Bubble or not, there is no way I'm folding KK heads up, right or wrong it may be.

BTW combu, lol to folding quad A's.

I have made it deep many times and I very rarely make "big laydowns"


Probably my biggest laydown was in UB MTTs. It was in the later stages, so guy raised PF, one called, I reraised, they both called. Both guys had been pretty decent and we had decent stacks.

I had AA

The flop came KQJ

first guy pushes, the other calls.

I sit and stare. I finally fold, first guy had KK, other had QQ.

Oh yeah, the river was a T.

i have only started playing poker like a month ago. we have these weekly tournaments at our house and in the very first one that i played, i went out with AA, really early. that makes laying down those easy for me now.

No he's not, I was at the table with him. It was a Loooooong time ago though. I'll try and find the Hand History.

Whenever I get close to pay off time, I will fold almost anything.....but after pay off's start look out

Well, I usually opt not to involve myself in risky stuff in the bubble situations. Remember, you're fighting to survive as long as possible in MTTs.
