I don't know how to explain it, but after my transition to 50NL 2 weeks ago and especially my transition to 100NL last week, I kind of have the feeling that I don't really enjoy poker as much as I used to.

I started with a $500 deposit from my financial aid to play poker somewhere around October. First three times I played on Bovada, I lost about $200 playing 5NL/10NL/25NL due to tilt/being underrolled. Withdrew with the intention to not play again until I was maybe out of college. Friend sort of persuaded me to try again with my financial aid money, and so I came back for the last time deciding that if I failed again, I wouldn't play until I was out of college. When I quit after the 3rd time, I did miss playing poker just days after and still thought about it weeks later.

Within 2 month and a half, I built my BR to $1900 and moved to 50NL. And within a week and a half, I got to $2400 and took a shot at 100NL although I was a BR nit. Was super frustrating that I could only play 50NL from 8pm-10pm on Bovada Zone. Been staying at 100NL for 2 sessions and now at $3.7k BR, and probably staying there permanently unless I go on a huge downswing.

At 25NL, I usually had an urge to play poker, and I played almost everyday I had spare time unless I was drained from college work/midterms/finals. I STILL sometimes played after all-nighters for finals/essays to relieve the dullness of studying/working for so long. And when I was on a heater, I played until I dropped dead. I've had two 8-10 hour sessions before at 25NL on 2 Zone 2 cash, and that is not good for your body when you're a full-time college student. At 50NL/100NL I almost always quit after 2-3 hrs, whether I'm losing or on a huge heater. Ever since 50NL and especially 100NL, poker kind of feels more like a job to me. Tbh I think if it weren't for the money factor, I'm not sure if I would be playing anymore. Before it was a combination of the potential money I could be making at 100NL+ and my enjoyment of the game.

I can't really explain it, but I don't feel eager anymore to go play. I can go several days to a week without playing and without a strong desire to play. And when I have winning sessions, even big winning sessions like my past two sessions ($850 and $450 in 3hr sessions at 100NL), I don't feel anything anymore. No sense of pride or joy. Instead I think I might have actually felt numb. I just don't know why I'm feeling this way. Maybe making $20-$100+ decisions on a constant basis, more stress due to absolute $$ being at stake, finally reaching my 100NL goal, getting bored after playing 80k+ hands for no reason???? Anyone ever feel this way??

If I continue playing, which I probably will, I can buy myself a car, pay off all my student loans, buy whatever gadgets I want, and help support my family even though I'm just a college student. I'm pretty confused. I think anyone else would be feeling accomplished, proud, and happy. A good winrate, moving up from 25NL to 100NL in less than 3 months/40 sessions, and at the point where I can make more money than most people can make in their regular jobs. No coach, just self-study. And yet here I feel empty.

I'm not trying to be rude, but gathering the above information I'd say you have a gambling addiction.

It seems like you're not "eager " to play unless you're constantly able to increase the risk.

I've played since I was 16 years old ( 36 now ) sometimes playing for 2 to 3 days without a break.
I play tournament buy ins from $0.10 up to $15k.
It's all the same really.
I've never played for any sort of rush or thrill. It's what I'm good at.
I've got a background in advanced mathmatics, and I've always had knack for reading people and situations.
I'm a poker player for the same reason people sell cars.

I am sure I do not have a gambling addiction. As I said before, I can go days or a whole week without playing and feel fine about it. I did this for my midterms/finals, and there are lots of days in the past few weeks at 50NL/100NL where I had no desire to play. I even took a week off from last Wednesday until today, and yet I did not have a strong desire to play. And even though I ran super hot and played well, I quit right after 3 hours. Like you, I don't play for a thrill or rush. I used to enjoy the game, but now I don't really seem to be enjoying it much anymore. I've been playing a lot less than I used to. Maybe like 70-75% less than at 25NL. This happened right when I moved to 50NL and 100NL.

And I think you're misinterpreting what I'm trying to say. I am nowhere near "eager" to jump to higher stakes and increase the risk. I am a bankroll nit. I am actually much more stressed at higher stakes due to the $ amount, and I think that might account for a lot of the numbness I'm feeling right now. I just happened to take a shot at 100NL super fast because I was getting frustrated being only to log 2 hrs at exactly 9pm-11pm at Bovada. 50NL Zone is dead except for 2 hrsish at night. And since I ran super hot for 2 sessions I can stay at 100NL and play whenever I want, instead of having to wait exactly for a certain time to play at 50NL.

A gambling addiction has little to do with the frequency of play or whether or not you have the urge to play.

My question to you is can you enjoy when you play at any stake?

Granted you're looking for a different type of answer, at the same time I didn't misinterpret. I just went a different route with the topic.

I might be missing something here, but to make sure I checked what gambling addiction is online. It's a type of impulse-control disorder, basically being unable to control desires/urges/impulses to gamble despite the toll it takes on your life such as affecting loved ones, feeling the need to be secretive about gambling, burning up your savings, getting thrills from gambling, gambling in response to stress/depression, etc. I do not have strong urges to play poker, especially as of lately. And I fit none of the symptoms of gambling addiction.

I'm playing it for the money right now for the most part. To buy myself a new laptop, pay off future student loans, groceries, etc. Basically just to make money because I'm a poor college student.

Well, I'm sticking to 100NL. But I figure I might enjoy it less once I move up again to say 200NL, and as for 50NL I feel the about same way about I do now at 100NL. But I did feel a bit more numb and less enjoyment when I moved up again from 50NL to 100NL. If I were to play at 25NL right now, it'd just feel like play money/a waste of my time. It's like reaching the mid-game/end-game in a video game and going back all the way to the beginning to fight the weak creatures. That's boring, regardless of how fun the video game is. I don't mean to be rude but I don't see how being able to enjoy playing at any stake is that pertinent.

I do, however, enjoy live poker with friends occasionally. It's more social, and there's not really much stress involved. I also find talking about poker and making jokes with my close friend pretty fun/funny at times, but other than that I don't find it enjoyable much anymore.

I think you are just getting bored as you would any job. Poker can be very static, and it just becomes you looking at numbers all day long like an accountant, and nobody wants to do that job!

bro its simple. You are too involved. No offense but get a life outside of school and poker. You joined 2 months ago and you have 160 post... obviously poker CONSUMES you. Im not saying putting in 10 hour sessions is wrong, but when you play like you probably do, its just not healthy until you are LOOKING for a JOB. You are in college. Try to enjoy life. And however you feel if you jumped to a stake your BR couldnt handle you would feel excitement. Its just a comfort zone cause you have more money than youll ever need right now.. Not to mention financial aid still...

I think you need some new goals.
You have made the jump from micro to mid stakes (congratulations) and now you are bored as perhaps you don't have something new and specific to aim for.
Write down some poker goals for the next year and post them so others can see how you are getting on and can keep you motivated.

Okay I probably exaggerated with my language a bit, excuse me. Like the "dropping dead" part. Sometimes my language becomes a little superfluous and exaggerated. Even one of my TAs grading my essay pointed it out once, haha.

I do have a life outside of school and poker. I do have a social life at my university dorm, I still keep in touch with family and friends from back home, and I still pursue my music hobby. I average only about 4 sessions a week 2-3 hrs, so really that's not a lot of time. I don't have the time or energy to put more than that really, especially in college.

For the past 3 weeks, I've been doing something like only 2-3 sessions a week even though I have school off and have a ton of free time. Yeah I was exaggerating on the 10 hour sessions. It was 8 hrs max on two different sessions. I very rarely go over 3 hrs. Maybe 3-4 times out of 40+ sessions.

I wasn't really underrolled for 50NL when I jumped up, and I was probably a little underrolled for 100NL at my first shot. It wasn't exactly excitement. It was a lot of adrenaline and stress.

And I'm just making 3 posts here a day. I think with my language/some exaggeration it could seem like poker is a huge part of my life, but to say that it consumes me is a little overboard.

You need to find a new hobby at least for a while. Doing that gives pleasure to you personally. And after a while to return to poker. No need to turn poker into operation if it is unpleasant for you personally. If the goal is only to earn money to help your family, then you need to be patient and continue to play if you get to win.

the way i feel about poker now and then

the only way i played in a cash game if i won money in a free roll which some times it's hard to do because of free money people like to play real lose and they don't care if the win or not. i mostly don't like it when they just sit out. i think online they should give that person so long to sit out and then kick them out of the tourney. like NLOP site does that. but some times i do get sick of playing poker because the way that people play in the free rolls. but if i do win i'm happy to win even if it's only 2 dollars.

Man, in the past month I've been on that bad mood for playing poker.. That's probably because I stopped studying, stopped winning or dunno what else..

The point here is. You gotta love the game.. Offcourse the cash is the goal of poker but, yet, you still need to have fun with it.

If you don't see it anymore, then just withdraw your money and go play anything else.

After years of playing I too went through stagnant phase of feelings towards the game. It mainly came from grinding so much that I got so tired that my play became automated.

My fix was to take a break which was to be for a month or so. It ended up being 12 months, but I feel a lot better for it.

Take a break. No matter how much you love it, poker can get boring after awhile. It's just like anything else.

Only way to get better is to play a lot of hands. If you believe you can win at poker you just have to put in the hours and work hard at it.

You need to take a break for a few months. Then when you get back to the game, play will be a pleasure.

As reading all this words I can make some decision!

1. If you had such a big bankroll and playing well Bovada cash games, WHY did you write here and try to add yourself to Freeroll Club when you could win 20$ for the 1st place only, at the same time when you play 100NL cash ????

2. You say that you start to lose ENJOY after only 2 month playing and WINING lots of money....BUT how can it be possible, at the same time when I win 1 or 2 tournaments per month I was energized for the year ahead. And you win almost 4k$ per 2 month and say that you lost enjoin....

3. Nice story, but if it is true, I think you will not write about it here...

I think you need to sit back and see whats going on in your life. Maybe you are using poker for some type of void in your life. You win not happy lose not happy i think you have some kind of ghost in your closet.

1) I have no idea what you're talking about some Freeroll Club. I play exclusively 100NL cash/Zone.

2) Playing for higher stakes takes the enjoyment out of the game for me to some degree. This is an extreme but imagine playing something like 1000NL+ and see how fun that is after a week or two. If you feel energized after winning a lot of money, great for you. Not everybody is like you.

3) Why would I lie about my losing interest in poker? That's super offensive and very rude of you. I could snap a picture of my transactions on Bovada, but doing so just to prove to you that I'm not an immature college student lying about my poker career is a waste of my time. And why would I not write about it here? I'm a cardschat regular, and I have a question that I would like some feedback on.

Hey guys, thanks for the response! I was beginning to take a break from poker for a while to see if I would enjoy it again after I come back when I feel like it. I also have some things to take care of in college for a month, so I might actually take a whole month off. Maybe play a few days here and there on the weekends, but I don't really have any time right now. I find that I am missing it a bit though.

I think you guys are right. Like anything else, if we do it too much, we might get bored of it. I only played about 3-4 sessions a week 2-4 hrs each for 2 and a half months, but maybe I need a break.
