Hi, so I decided to take a stab at live cash games. I hadn't before as it was quite a lot of money to me to lose. I'd only played live cash once before with no success.

Anyway my first session went very well playing on a £1/£1 table I was up £180 in no time. I found the play extremely bad and pretty much all the players gamblers who loved to call down with marginal hands, they hated folding. I felt totally in control and loved it.

So the following week I decided to take another trip down to play some more cash and lost £120 (my bankroll for the night) The play still seemed terrible and loads of gamblers. I didn't play my A-game I have to admit but what I want to know is this...

What is my best strategy to beat the live gamblers? As they were all extremely loose should I tighten up? I mean these guys were regularly making a 5-6 BB open raise and do not fold to a 3 bet. I tried to see cheap flops with good value as if I hit I get paid a lot of the time. If I do tighten up will this cut the amount of calls I get when I do hit my hands?

Like you said, players at this level are playing for fun. They didn't drive to the casino to fold draws. Don't worry about them adjusting to your play - it just isn't going to happen.

There is no one piece of advice that will apply to all table dynamics, but in general the looser the table is the less you should bluff. Also, because of the stack sizes and sizes of the open raises you'll want to play pretty tight preflop.

Most importantly - get used to variance. You're going to experience some seemingly impossible downswings at points. Tilting is only going to make it worse.

Live Low Stakes poker is very easy to beat. Tighten up your range and value bet the fish to death. Don't fall victim to FPS, (Fancy Play Syndrome), playing tight, aggressive ABC poker is all you need to do. Also don't level yourself. If an opponent seems strong, it's because they are, if they seem weak, it's because they are.

Keep it simple stupid.

Best thing you can do. Is keep to one format *ONline* and learn poker concepts over and over until you know them.

When your switching online to live because your not winning online? Your just wasting your time.

Stick to online, focus on your leaks and eventually when you have too much money you don't know what to do with then go live and crush them. But then u'll work out you'll want to stay online because you make more money then.

Stop going after the easy money and lying to yourself and just work on your game and the money will come later.

You said it yourself: tighten up. If they're not folding, then don't bluff. Just value bet the living daylights out of them with your good hands, and fold the garbage. No need ro do anything the least bit fancy, no need to merge ranges, or anything like that because they're not exploiting, even if they're aware of what you're doing (and even that is questionable).

Also, don't do what I see all too many on-line players do. Your opponents are right there, so pay attention to what they're doing. You can pick up on live tells, bet sizing tells, and get a better line on their play. It's free information, so use it.

Agree to this.

Can't play fancy with people that don't understand poker. They aren't worried about what you have. They see two Aces and think they haven't had them in a week, theres no shot they can fold on a 5-6-7-8 board. Don't try to rep the 9 they won't care.

You have to play ABC back at them, and play tight-ish. I still love limping with 6-8 suited hands to try and crack their pairs/Ak combos. They never expect you to show up with 2 pair with those type of hands. The looks you get are priceless.

With these players you play hand strength and limit your bluffing to almost none. If you can see cheap flops do so.

What is wrong with wanting to play poker live as well as online?

Are online players not allowed to also enjoy the recreational aspect of live play? Or even play both for profit?

If so I guess I should hand back the £4k or so I have made this year playing live.... (last year was a +£8k year overall however I have less time and other life commitments this year so I have not put in anywhere near the same amount of hours).

If you want to play live, either for money or for fun... go for it!! Poker is not a job for the majority people and at the end of the day we all play because we enjoy the game. If you enjoy playing live and are using sensible money management (not necessarily BRM as fewer playes have a live bankroll, but do have expendable income) and want to minimise losses/maximise profit in the process then there is absolutely nothing wrong with that...

1. No one likes losing in poker (overall not fun for this guy)
2. Your at a different stage of your poker life.
3. You do have a point about recreational and fun and it's easy to forget poker is different for everyone.

We all enjoy the game differently :) so i guess i can be blindsighted or blunt with responses from my angle and I'm sorry for that.

last point though he did come on here to better himself in playing? So i gave constructive criticism.

He's right you know^

live poker is free money, just get AA and open for 10x and some old guy will flop top top and call 3 streets, lol

I myself have been a victim of "fancy play syndrome" playing live. Don't bother. The people at your table have literally 10% of the poker thought process that most of us do.

Yea, these players are never folding their inside straight draws even. So when the flush or straight hits and they bet big, believe em. Of course you also need to look for habits and other player tells that will help you put them on ranges too, but their ranges are going to be so wide usually that the best thing you can do is solidify your own game first before trying to adjust.
