I've played a little bit of online cash and I hear the games in live are much softer. I wanted to know how the games are different, and what stakes you can expect to win at in live poker, if you can beat NL25 online.

In nearly any casino, the average play will be weaker than what it is online. The main reason behind that is online poker (at least partially so) is played at specific software, which is designed to provide the opportunity to play POKER.

In casinos (which is also the reason why many people look for online gambling sites, which simulate not only poker, but tons of different gambling games - roulette, blackjack, slots - you name it) many people come to play just for fun / take a shot at poker / blow off some steam from a big loss at a roulette table - in other words, many different reasons, which indicate that they are not at a casino to grind.

There is a great scene in "Rounders" which nicely explains that the regs at casinos usually wait / specifically look for tables that have these random gamblers.

There are a lot of trash players at casinos. That is a fact. People go to casinos to gamble and those same people see poker as gambling. They're easy pickings.

Cardrooms on the other hand, I would avoid those unless you know what you're doing. There are a lot of regs at cardrooms that know what they're doing, so a lot tougher competition. Some people say they want to play against the best so they can be the best. That is pure nonsense. You want to play against the worst so you can have the highest profits.

I enjoy playing online more than live. You can play as many tables as you want, so you won't get bored. Live is so damn slow and I'm an action junky. If I get bored, I tend to start playing my B/C/D/F game rather than my A game.

Anyways, good luck.

I think that online and offline are very different. Not every online player can play well offline and vice versa.

The biggest difference is that on-line, you are playing against an image and statistics, so you have a tough time making physical reads. In the casino or live, you are actually facing a real person that you can see, picking up any tendencies or tells, as well as overall personality and their engagement with the game itself. Also, you know that your opponents are not multi-tabling. Another thing is the pace of play is much slower. If you are a decent poker player, you probably play lower stakes, because most pros stay away from micro and probably play $10/20 minimum to make it worth their time. You might see grinders at $1/2, but they have to play a significant amount of time to make it worth their while, unless they see it as free money.

Playing live is the hardest game play you will experience. You have to read their physical movement and even facial expression. You would feel pressure playing live than online. Sometimes playing online can be boring since your playing on a computer and would not even know if its real human or bot playing on the table.

Big diff between online and live.
Online players are so much better then live.Poker in casino you can play for fun.Take a example, first time in Vegas let go to gamble,ok you can spent 10$,20$,and you lost that its for fun,but online players didnt register for fun, they register for money.

If we are talking specifically about how the games/players are softer:

Online the standard preflop open size is 3x
Live it is between 5x-8x

Online roughly 5% of the population still donk bets
Live over 80% of players still donk bet

Live a full ring table will often have 4-5 preflop limp call stations
Online you don't see very many Limpers

Live you get to physically see which players are drunk.
Online you are guessing.

Live you can often sneak a peak at other ppl's cards as they are being dealt, especially the people beside you. At least I do when I can. I know, shame on me.

IMO, these are the main reasons why live play is so much softer. Add in alcohol, marked Cards, chip signalling, etc... As well.

If you can beat NL25 for 3bb/100 or more then you can beat $2/$5 and probably $5/$10 live. Maybe even $10/$20 in a small town. Not in Vegas. According to Fees, Stars 25NL is a little harder than $1/$2 NL in Vegas. Where I live, Stars 10NL is more difficult than the $5/$10NL Live games.

Live games will have bigger swings. In my town you can bet up to 1.25xpot with the nuts and OESDs will call both streets. Really big upswings, really big downswings.

If you can beat 25NL 9max or even better 6max you can beat live cash games for sure. Just make good choice of games and with a good bankroll you are on the right way to win faster than ever in online poker.

One reason that live games are usually softer is that the game is so much slower.

This actually is an adjustment for an experienced online player, just so you know.

You can't play multiple games folding, waiting for a hand to play. You have to sit and wait, and wait some more. It takes discipline, you may have to wait 30-45 mins before you get something close to a hand, only to fold. Bring some music and stay away from the alcohol. Resign yourself to a certain range and stick with it.

1. live will be slower... much slower... very-very much slower
2. maybe it's my exp, but live hames are fishy as hell 0_o. The ammount of cold calls with J8s from MP into pulling 3d pair of 8s is amazing. I do feel sad that I can not play live that much as there are not so many games in my area, but grinding nl50(had to go nl25 because it was too hard for me) online was tougher than playng 3$/6$ live(mind you I'm not some uver-pro with zillions in BR, but just a guy who knows some basics like odds). Althoug to be honest I did not play that much live in general, only about 5 times

yes it is true, if you beat NL25 online you can play NL100-200 offline, but the fact is that the offline game just enother, it is difficult to sit waiting for the tables 10:00 as strong hands will come every hour and even 2 per night and played just 10 hands, and each wants to play 5 different hand sdes need self-control :)

Depends on the rake. I've played in games where the rake is 10% and they still expect tips for small pots. I'll take online anyday over such horrible games.

30 min to a hour commute one-way, 10% rake, + tips = the table you're playing at better be complete droolers that completely play face up.

Live is much easier and more lucrative than online poker. The only advantage of online poker is 24/7 access.

Is there no rake in live games? That is cool because you are not playing against the house.

The other big difference between on-line and live is the stakes you can play. You have to risk more money live than on-line. And Like most people have said, you have to grind live poker unless you get extremely lucky early. Live you have to watch yourself as well as everyone else. Amazing how many people forget that they are being watched also. And you never know who sneaked that Colt .45 under their shirt(lol).
