i am not a very skilled live player but then again i am not that bad. i was wondering if sunglasses or any other things actually can hide tells and if so at witch level of play would you need to be afraid of hiding tells. Also, what are some common tells that amature players give in a game that you would be playing with your friends at someones house? I can never seem to pick up reads on people. the only thing i do is imagine what i would have if i was betting the way they were and play off of that.

i think thts a gd start, putting urself in there position.but remember 'weak is strong and strong is weak'when a player is betting pretty confidently with there chest out this is a slight tell of a strong handif a player is trembling or hands are slightly shaking aftr putting in a big bet hes weak.i believe it all comes down to practice and more experience at the end of the day

Sunglasses are a matter of personal preference. I used to wear them all the time, now I don't wear them at all. I have found that it is more intimidating to stare at someone without them.

As far as tells are concerned, a nice one I like to look for is how a player places his chips in the pot. As with all tells, this is player independent. In other words, what it means when one player "splashes" the pot with chips will mean something different for another. The key is to pay attention and try to figure out what it means for each.

A good rule of thumb to go by when dealing with tells is that they should usually be used as additional information. You should be using betting patterns and such to gather information on how particular players play, and then try to pick up tells that will give you further indication on the strength or weakness of his hand.

Human beings are creatures of habit. until you have played against the same person a few times you wont get a "good" tell. even if it is obvious in later games because you wont know what to look for. With that being said one of the most common, and hardest to hide, tell is the shaking hands. Watch when a player reaches for chips there hands shaking is a pretty good tell that they have released endorphins and adrenalinin their blood system...ie they just hit the card they needed.

A lot depends on what limit you are playing at. In low limit games, ditch the sunglasses...you look like a fool...makes everyone else think that you think you are a pro...and they know better. At higher limits, sunglasses are more accepted.

As far as tells go, concentrate on finding tells in the best players at the table. Particularly the tight aggressive and loose aggressive players. It takes time to spot tells, so like Cowboy said, don't be surprised that you don't find many until you play with someone a few times. I tend to concentrate on hand movements, betting patterns, and facial expressions. At lower limits, players can be so loose that tells may not be as reliable as they are at higher limits.

In my first live tourney, I was looking for the shaking hand tell to tell me if my betting opponent had a very strong hand. This guy on my right bet out and his hands were shaking a lot. I folded a fairly decent hand. A few hands later, the same scenario occurred. I may have had top pair or something, but he spilled his chips when he was counting them and his hand was shaking a lot when he placed them in the middle. I folded. After watching him for a while, I realized he must have parkinsons disease or something, because his hands just constantly shook, whether he was in a hand or not. :)
