Low stakes games are usually passive. This means you should almost never bluff and you should rarely call down "bluffs". BET FOR VALUE. That's some of the best advice for low level games. If you have a big hand and are out of position do not check it. Like I said these games are mostly passive, these guys will more often than not take a free card. These guys want to get to showdown. Be prepared to bet/fold (even "big" hands). There are some opponents that will NOT raise unless they have a nutty hand. Watch your opponents to figure out who they are and also note what are the weakest hands players are willing to go broke with. That's all I have for now. Every now and then you will get into an aggressive game. You should be able to easily identify this and make the necessary changes. I would also recommend you check out Ed Millers books. They are written for these lower stakes games. One of my favorite books of his is Playing The Player. It will help you identify player types and exploit them.

I live in Georgia. There isn't a casino down the street. I mostly play in "home games" which tend to be tougher than at a casino (but still good). Several times a year I will go to biloxi, cherokee or to florida to play. I normally play 1/3 or 2/5. Cherrokee I almost always play 2/5 (the 1/3 tables are electronic). I have never sat in a game bigger than that. Online I normally play 100nl (bovada) but have played some 400nl. Im definitely no poker super star but I can hold my own and consistently beat these low level games.

This post is excellent advice ! The bet fold is so important to getting value from your passive opponents and being able to get away when they take aggressive action . I was able to learn alot about these concepts for live play by listening to all of bart hanson's old podcasts . He talked a lot about live play and how the bet fold concept and getting value was so important .

Bart Hansons old podcasts (Deuce Plays) are free in the iTunes podcast store. They are geared towards live cash game strategy and are very informative. I personally have listened to them all. I recommend the OP to check these out.

For live games, play the player and not cards. Especially so if you are playing the same people every time. Take note about them - TA, LA, TP or LP.

Another is poker tells. Looks for their tells and hide yours.

Don't get real hung up on tells. The important tells are bet sizing and frequency. You will pick up on these quickly. Do not worry about hiding any tells until you are exploited. There is no reason in balancing your range or hiding betting tells. Low level players are normally playing their cards and don't even know how to put an opponent on a range of hands or anything about hand reading. That's why in low level games you hear guys saying "I put him on ace king" or some other hand that wouldn't even make sense by the action.

This is my own theory based upon experience. In live, low-limit games, you win money by doubling up or busting people. Anything else makes you fall victim to the rake. You have a chance to play a big pot approx three times per hour. You flop a set, have the nut flush draw, hit your straight. Most of these times a big pot does not pan out. It takes two hands at least to make a big pot. Or you just miss. Approx once every other hour, you play a big pot. When you go card dead, when the draws go in the muck, AK misses 2 out of 3 times--when poker happens, your stack (and profits) slowly melt away until you hit your avg hourly rate.

You can play TAG and this is the usual result--three chances an hour and one big pot every other. You can play LAG and increase the chances of both, but your swings will be a lot bigger and, I believe based upon a lot of observation, the results will be fairly close to the same. - That's the theory. Have at it.
