Hey all,

I'm looking for some opinions on entering pots with any two cards...mostly, I'm talking about late position, especially on the button or in the blinds. What are the pot odds you need to enter the pot with any two cards? I've been entering at about 7-1 odds, 4-1 if I have a marginal hand that plays well after the flop. Too tight? Too loose?

These circumstances don't happen too often, but they do happen.

Thanks!

If someone raises and there are 4+ callers I call with any two lol. Just to hit a monster. Don't know if it is a good idea but I get sucked into those big family pots :D

I don't get in to a family pot with ATC. Makes very little sense to me and sounds a bit spewy. Even if we hit the monster, does it pay for all the other times we didn't hit it?

Don't do it. Sure you can get good odds to flop 2 pair+, but so often you won't get paid off for it, it's just bleeding money. Save that stuff for drunken home games.

try doing some math on odds of

flopping 2 pair +
flopping/making straights or flushes

(forget for a second the times that 93s may not be good on a K93 flop or that a 76s flush may not be good in a 6-way pot.)

then calculate how many times you completely whiff, get raised pre and have to fold, call one bet on the flop with a weak 1 pair only to fold to further aggression, chase a draw on the flop and don't get there.

How do villians play? How deep are stacks? What are your 2 cards? Who is in the blinds? Do the villians limp/fold if we raise? Are they fit or fold post flop? Those are simple questions to ask before calling in any decision pretty much. Plus you can think of many more relevant questions before calling.

^^^^^^ This is what I would say to you too OP! Are you wantin to play winning poker or just poker. As for me I adapt to the table and a great way to do that is following steps as posted above. Playing odds is the a correct structure in some chases but in others u can throw it out the window and adjust to the table play. One thing to remember is never over commit yourself when playing ATC, know when to let it go. imo

Thanks everyone. ATC probably not a good idea, but maybe with cards that have potential post flop, like higher suited connectors and such.

Also, there is no way I would call a family "raise" with ATC. I was mostly referring to limping in ONLY in late position, especially in the small blind when it only costs you 50% less.

Nonetheless, point taken.

Funny you should mention home games...I played in one with trusted friends in Fairbanks about a week ago...the whole table was loose. I wasn't trying to make money; just playing for fun, mostly Omaha, with some 7-card stud and a game called "guts," which is a lot of fun. Anyways, my buddy next to me drew to 4 aces during a game of 5-card draw when I was dealt a full boat...that one hurt a lot.

Home games, to me, = fun, not profit. I guess it depends on where you play and who you play with...
