Seriously, no one at stakes up to maybe 1/2 is folding for 2 bets rather than 1. When 123 most likely chops, you want to put as much money in the pot as possible when there's multiple players in the pot. Preflop seems like a great spot to do that.
And yes, equity-wise A23X is identical to other top 25% hands. However, A23X can be played much stronger because you hit more flops, and have the nuts for low far far far more often than the other top 25% of hands.
Also, how many players were at the table? A laggy strategy can be very productive short-handed playing LO8. In fact, most of the biggest LO8 winners are actually LAGs who play shorthanded. Full ring nittyness isn't a viable strategy past 1/2.
