I have noticed noone on CC seems to play Limit hold em. Just wondering why?
and is it worth the time at the micros to build a bigger bankroll (less variance and cheaper to play)????
I personally have not played it so this may be a stupid question...

LHE is *higher* variance, and the edges are smaller.

I dislike Limit Hold'em (online anyway) because you can't raise enought to push a donk off a draw. You'll notice in a lot of strategy discussions, 3-betting, 4-betting, bet sizing, and pushing all-in all play major roles in the strategy of the game. These strategic tools are not available to you in Limit Hold'em. Where you might make a large bet or possibly shove to protect a a flopped mid pair against a player holding over cards, or straight or flush draws, you obviously can't do this in Limit Hold'em. It's hard enough to get a stubborn player (donkey) to lay down a draw in No Limit. In Limit Hold'em, it's all but impossible.

It's only worth it if you have a really small bankroll.

Variance is more a measure of the frequency of swings (wins vs losses), not just the size of them. At any given stake and volume, the size of LHE swings will be smaller because the pots are smaller, so the risk of ruin is generally less. That may be what you're confusing with "lower variance." But the wins are also smaller for the same reason, and typically fewer in number because you're getting to the river and showdown more often than in NLHE. So the swings are smaller but typically much more frequent, ergo the variance is higher.

With NLHE skill/style adds more to your edge because the better player very often wins with the worst hand by not letting you get to showdown. Also, better players will often fold worse made hands without building a big pot when a worse player with a better hand spazzes out and prices him out of the pot. Fold equity is a huge element in NLHE strategy, but barely exists at all in LHE. The edges in LHE are smaller because so many more hands go to showdown due to people being priced in to call with more draws and speculative hands. It's not just about bad players not folding, although there is that too. But certain plays are 100% correct in LHE that are lolbad in NLHE because you're getting a price.

That's not to say there are no fish and that you can't be profitable, nor is it true that it's only for small bankrolls. Compared to NLHE it's just not as exciting or *potentially* profitable, again because of the small pots and swings. For risk-averse players who don't thrive on the thrill that NLHE players get from big-pot/all-in/bluff situations, LHE or the other limit games seem more like "pure" poker.

LHE is also considered "solved" by computers and bots, while NLHE is not. While some argue that NLHE can never be truly solved, I expect one day there will be enough computing power to approximate the human brain in such a way as to minimize mistakes to the point of beating 99.9% of human players.

LHE is a pretty dead game in a lot of ways....

I know how to play it mechanically for mixed games, but honestly I hate playing LHE in cash games.

It is swingy, mechanical and position is basically everything in a lot of ways because in holdem no one flops anything often times.

It's only worth it if you <s>have a really small bankroll</s> are actually good at LHE.

FYP

Personally I've always hated the advice that LHE is a great game for people with a small bankroll. It's maybe true that it's a good game if your only metric is making that small bankroll last a bit longer than it might if you play NL. But otherwise, unless you're already a winning LHE player you'll lose that small bankroll just as surely as if you're a losing NLHE player - maybe even more surely, since there's far less scope in LHE for a lucky run to make up for your bad play.

I dont think its so easy to win at limit holdem, at the smaller stakes online,.everyone seems to play every hand, pretty much and hope for the best. A few times, i played limit cash tables in a casino, was not m uch fun either. Was almost impossible to push anyone off any hand till river there too. Maybe people play better, if the limits are definitely higher though too.

I like LHE. It is fun and easy to multitable. That said there are not many games of Limit available online in the USA. When I am tapped out from NL, I play LHE. When I want to gamble I play PLO!

I have a buddy that would go down to Foxwoods on Sundays or during the certain days of the week that bus services have senior days. He said, after the early bird brunch special was over granny and gramps would play 2-4 limit and those games were very easy. It's still not worth it to play LHE cash imho.

As morris said I think many online tables are susceptible to bots. I kind of like LHE tournaments. I played spread limit on the strip in Vegas, that's a bit more enjoyable.
