Hi guys,

I'v tried a fair few cash games, mainly no'limit but tried out limit the other night. What's the basic strategy with limit? I ask because it's all to easy for someone to call a raise holding nothing but a high card and hoping to hit on the turn/river..It's actually very hard to push out any of the players at a table even if it's paired or flush/straight draw board. Seems they just keep calling regardless. They get lucky too a few times with Ace/king rag or whatever. Crazy..

It just seems raising and just keep pushing and eventually you are paid of with a better hand. I notice even when i raised pre-flop at a 9 table with pocket aces and pocket kings they always get called by the majority of players and even possibly raised. Flop comes, nothing dangerous and i raised to be called and again right down to the river and my kings and aces held to luckily win agaisn't 4 opponents at times.. The point is, how can you not win at limit because you're going to win a pot at some point and would put your previous losses at an even keel. Not much skill involved at limit games or what? I know at micro limits even in no limit you might get called of a big bet because that's what people do at micros but at least some people think "hm, i'v got nothing can't really call this" at limit it seems a case of "I've got 10-1 odds to call here, may as well" Odds are always going to be good in limit hold em arent they?

I'm temped to try out a tournament but feel these would run for soooo long it would become a drag. Even if you just called all day with every hand it would take a while before you get knocked out and eventually your going to pull of a big pot with your winning hand..

Any tips/advice would be great, thanks.

i havent played a lim holdem tourn in over 5yrs, theyre too long and theres always that feeling that i really cant make ppl pay for their mistakes like in a nl game. so i avoid em.

probably isnt the best thing to do-ignore em. im sure there is a profitable way to play em but its not really worth it to me to play limit holdem whether cash or in tourns.

yes when you play limit you will keep the chasers in until the river..Ihate playing any limit gamess your chances of being suked out are alot freater when you have 3 or 4 heros chasing the river..

I must be missing something

You don't play limit games because the players are dumb and this somehow impedes your ability to win? Gee and I thought making money was a good thing ! Silly me .......

When i first played Limit Holdem i had your same impression and i think that this forces you to play even tighter than in any other games. However it can turn profitable to wait till higher blinds and use others curiosity for your purposes (but however you ll have to wait and discard a looot of hands)

Limit holdem is much more math based. Because of the fixed betting size, your edge is smaller since you a) can't get as good of implied odds as in NL and b) can't force players to make pot odds mistakes nearly as often.

There are some spots where you can raise or check-raise to confront the field with a double bet which would make them choose between folding and calling with poorer odds. But for the most part if someone has an 8+ out draw or even a 5 out draw (say middle pair against a likely top pair) they are getting odds to call down. Because of this often playing tight preflop in order to make better hands postflop (eg AT-AK crushing their any ace range when an ace flops) is correct.

On the plus side, the megadonatorfish don't lose their money nearly as fast as they do in NL (speaking mostly of cash games here). So they keep coming back for more :) I've seen such awful players playing LHE that it's a marvel that they aren't drooling on themselves as they play.

At the right table it's also an action fest, but in a good way. Chances are that in a NL cash game, if it's generally aggressive, it's full of solid aggressive players, rather than the maniac/megafish that inhabit limit games. You know the type, the "courtesy cap" with any hand they want to play, just to play a big pot.
