Alright Cardschat regs, most of you have probably seen me lurking the threads the past few months but have never properly introduced myself or made a decent thread. It is time.

Firstly I will introduce my self. I am currently living in Melbourne and studying Psychology and sociology. I am basically straight out of high school and into uni. At the moment im living with my girlfriend and have been playing cards since I was young. I began by playing 5 card draw, sevens, and Gin Rummy with my dad. Poker has always drawn me to it. I find the game fascinating and love it. I began taking poker seriously about a 8 months ago and began to play online and at a local poker league live game (Regs there were actually quite good as they all loved the game). First deposit online went fairly quick and my competitive nature made me hit the threads and books to learn how to win at this game I love.

I have now run this $40 deposit to $80 (over around 9 000 estimated hands) and plan to keep building it up. This thread is basically a way to make me post hands, get volume and learn of the CC members. Volume is a big downfall at my game as I can only play 4 tables 2nl and this lately has become a grind. This is my Rise Up The Ranks Thread and I hope to be able to make some satisfying pocket money of poker in the future.

Here we go

Hand one, go for more on the flop, even pot, and bet turn bigger and ship river, you want his stack here.

Hand vs tight player, I dunno, maybe half pot river to get called by worse Qs or a curious T? Obv b/f.

The QQ is a gii pre vs maniacs yes. The other day I gii twice vs a maniac with KJs, he had Q7o for one of them. If you don't like that kind of variance then I guess you should move tables. Oh and just shove it OTF, cos you can't raise fold.

Yeah cafe hand 1 I was purely trying to go for value so kept it on the small size, this guy couldnt say no to smaller bets, But probably should of just gone for stacks.

Hand 2 I think I may of lost a bit of value on the river but I really didnt know what he was calling me down with

Good luck Jackle

I would say that 4 tables of 6max is the ideal amount, you'll have enough for 5nl soon, then it wont seem like such a grind when you're taking down bigger pots and playing better players.

Also, do you use a tracker? If you're going to take this seriously it's well worth the money to get one. You can do the 60 day free trials of both HEM and PT first and see which you like.

Yeah I know just sticking to the grind till I hit 5nl! Yeah using pokertracker 4 at the moment, the trial version but its not loading the hud properly for some reason.
Im just hoping this thread gets enough action to keep me motivated ill just make sure I put some hands up each session!!

Good luck mate, yeah I'd say 4 tables is pretty good to be starting with. On the kq hand, if you were deeper stacked need to be cautious with top pair vs someone who keeps calling, in this case, he can't have much left at river so I'd go for his stack unless I had history with him to be cautious.

Yeah deffo v-bet these rivers vs likely fish, they show up with TPWK, 2nd pair and even A-high a lot. I'd bet ~40c for value and ofc call if he puts the last bit of his stack in.

I raise sets there, no point in letting them draw. Just go for value and try to get stacks in.

Hey man what is your PS name, I might have played with you recently.

I often struggle with this scenario too. Obv it's good to raise as another spade with either mean you become the underdog or will kill the action.

OTOH it sucks when they all fold so sometimes I call and raise the turn instead.

In what way are you results orientated? You avoid making +EV plays that are high variance? Or you can't stop checking the cashier?

+1

I think its hard to not be a little bit results orientated, because that's why we love poker, winning hands and scooping pots...just need to find a balance and concentrate more on making the best decisions and combining the two....

Yeah for sure, Its something I have to work on, though I dont tilt because I usually quit a session before actual damage happens wich is good.

If you played well you should be happy, even if the results don't show it.

I cant stop checking the cashier either, but variance no longer affects me negatively. I've had a massive run bad recently but it's hardly (if at all) affected my play or my mood. I think the key is truly understanding variance, appreciating how brutal it can be, and accepting that it is part of the game. You can't control it so dont get mad about it :), it gets easier with time and having lots of buy-ins for the level you are playing helps buffer the swings.

Try running a variance simulator to see how utterly brutal it can be.

No variance would mean no fish, so its just something the good players need to take on the chin...I wish I could win every hand I play and I always think I am entitled to win it haha, but the more I play and hear about variance the more I accept it and understand it....aslong as we have an edge on the player pool we should be able to do ok I think...
