i know im gona get criticized here but thats what im looking for.2/5 motor city casino, ive been at the table for maybe fifteen minutes.(its the main game, not must move) i have noticed that its either limp, call...or raise call, so im not worried about getting 3 bet here and if i do, someone has a monsterhero is on button w/j9 off and i raise to $15 (500 effective)five people limped in front so i decided to make a pot with this hand because i know i can steal.after i raise, there is only me, the bb and the hjpot is 55$flop is qh,10c,kdcheck,checki make it thirty, bb makes it 70, hj folds.(and complained about having aq,wtf?)this guys and idiot, but he well could have aj here, and if he does and i raise, hes shovin. a set im not sure, two pair or top pair gk hes callingi make it 140 for reasons stated above, he calls HALLILUIA!!!turn is a blank 4, bb checks, i shove he calls and confidently shows q10, river 3. and he explodes about how bad i suck, what a donk i am and how he cant wait to stack me(through the night i stacked him twice more)i know it was a loose open but i had position, i knew i had a good chance to steal if flop appeared to hit me and i could win a big pot if i got lucky, though i could have easily got killed by aj but i could have folded if i thought i was beat given primary apponent(i think haha). my question is, i like to mix it up. some of those guys are very good and i dont want to be piogen holed. i play there alot and against of some of the same people. is this strategy a bad thing? is it in the long run a leak? so far, i think no, but i only play live so its a small sample size. any other thoughts are aprriciated too. thanks in advance

He called you a donk for flopping a straight? That does not make any sense. Seems to me that you played this hand perfectly. That fool was just mad that you took his money lol.

I guess he was mad that you played J9o.. His hand was not much better then yours preflop so whatever he can be mad and maybe next time he will think twice before calling off his whole stack with 2 pair. not even top 2.

3x the BB on the button sounds like a pretty standard play to me. Might even throw in another BB for the limpers.

I think you played the hand great! Now if the end of this story was I didnt have nothing... I thought they didnt have nothing... So i bluffed off my whole stack then that would be a different story lol. But any two cards can win!

I may only be a beginner but I agree, I think you played this hand right as you flopped at straight.

Also, (And someone with more experience than me may want to comment more on this) doesn't this kind of play come under "Balancing your range".

I think in the long term this may be a -EV opener, but if you play it like you did (with various reads on the table, read on his range) I don't understand why someone would overly criticize you for this...

I can't believe I heard -ev... You've opened your range on the button, people are limping with pretty much anything, and I you have the numbers in a hand you pretty much have value for any two cards to play with.

If you have decent reads on players you'll know whether you can get them to fold or not then your 2 cards won't really matter. Playing your opponents on the button is a real key to being successful on the button.

Have ppl call your made hands and make ppl fold your bluffed hands, it's a talent required to be successful at this game... J9o is awesome, next time they call you on the button you might have 55 and hit a set, or AK AA or whatever :) u get it.

Main thing is when you have a made hand like a straight on the flop, you get it in there and make sure your opponents call, you did this which is always great... But always be aware of the dangers of playing those J9 hands.

I had J10 on the button raised it to $12... hit the jack headsup on the flop and raised $30... he reraised to $100... I was forced to stop and shutdown the hand. If you can't let go these hands when your in a questionable situation that's when you'll have -EV... Against weaker players you can get away with playing marginal hands but with stronger players you may find yourself just throwing money away
