What exactly is position? I always hear players emphasize the importance of position but why is it so important? I have been playing poker for less than a year and I have been a winning player for most of it (downswing as of right now). I want to improve my game and I figure learning things that I have been neglecting such as position will make me better. What to do in position? How to play position? When are you in position? I would appreciate any and all help you can offer me.

You are in position when you are not the first to act. So when 3 players are in a pot the first to act is out of position (oop) , the second is in position as far as the first is concerned and the third is in position no matter what because he is the last player to act. It is important to play pots in position thats why playing hands from the button is important. If a person shows weakness or a scary card comes on the board and they check or raise small and you think you can represent a better hand or a made one you can outplay them postflop and win the pot.

Position at the table is very important. Like theboss said, when you are the last to act, you are in the best position. Also, your position should tell you what cards you can play. Like small pairs, and suited connectors. If you are in early position and limp and hope there is no big raise, you are out of position and may have to fold your hand. That is if you are smart you will fold those hands. Sometimes you may get lucky and make a set, but you will get beat more times than not. However, if you are in late position, you can play those hands better, and you might even be able to take the pot with just a 3 bet. But be careful doing that because some players will slow play a good hand hoping for a raise. I know this is long, and I may not even be making sense. But I tried. GL to you.

The key importance of position is the fact that we are playing a game where the more information you have the better decisions you can make, and having position allows you to gain the most information on your opponents to help you decide which action you want to take.

That is why position is important and why we can open an unopened pot with a wider range as our position is closer to the button because of all the seats the btn is the only seat gtd position on the rest of the table in the game.

Congrats on being a winning player, its better than most do in the game. Are you playing online or live and at what stakes? What is your current style of play (tight passive/agressive, loose passive/agressive .... typically what hands would you say you currently play from early position (closest to the left of the blinds vs closest to the button and throughout etc) as depending on your current style its possible you may already be somewhat positionally aware even if you don't really think about it, so it comes down to depending on what you currently know and the games you play in and how you play.

Essentially however regardless of style having position is very important and playing out of position (oop) vs in position (IP) often makes for tougher decisions and more difficult to extract value from any decent players who have position on you. Hope the games are still going well and that this helps somewhat.

You can also have a look at the cc article regarding poker starting hands that would give you some idea about positions at the table as well in regards to how you can open wider in later positions ...

I agree with PapaC. Watch out for slow players. Seems to be more now than ever.

Position is the most important thing in poker. Raising out of position with marginal hands is generally gonna land you in the poor house over time.
