Haven't played poker in a while up until two weeks ago. Played about 11,000 hands at 10nl buying in at around 4-5 dollars. I'm currently down -114.68 but up +233.51 in ev. I've actually deposited more, kinda lost it with some suckouts and went to roulette but, I'm curious to know how long this will last.

I'm currently running 35-45 buy ins under EV for the past year so I guess I can say I am still currently in my longest downswing. The thing about downswings though is that, well for me atleast, you start playing less due to the downswings which stretches out the length of time greatly. Over the last year I have probably only played ~100k hands while I was playing ~300k hands a year prior to the down swing.

So, you didn't lose right? You just learned and kept on learning? :)

Actually yes, it has helped me learn some valuable life lessons about balance and priorities and how dirty of a game poker can actually be. Gave me a taste of the potential downfalls of a pro poker player. What if I wasn't young and without responsibilities when this happened? What if I was a long term pro with a family and mortgage payments? Really opened my eyes to how dangerous of a career path poker is. Also shows my good character and the ability to persevere when times are rough. All in all, it sucks that it happened but I think my overall life/future is better because of it.

Or maybe you are entering coinflip situations too often and taking only card probability into your thinking as opposed to personality traits that will let you slowly profit more.

I was being staked by a European guy after Black Friday. He always put 30 buy ins for whatever stake I was playing in my account. I was down 20 buy ins before it turned around and then won 40 buy ins back in about 3 weeks.

The Poker Mindset

There's a great section on 'Downswings' in the book 'The Poker Mindset' by Ian Taylor, Matthew Hilger. It's very good because it teaches you the right way to think about them. The trouble is, downswings do not have any kind of set length or theorteical limit so it's better not to think about it and play your best! :D

There are a number of free poker variance calculators out there. I've played around with some of them a little bit and am usually surprised at how large a chance there is to be down over what is (to me at least) a large number of hands even with a decent win-rate. I guess you really do need to put in a huge amount of volume to overcome potential variance.

so downswing of 10K hands is "normal" unless there is something with your game =)

Downswing on the 1-2 NL

Started off decent 350$ in profit. Then over the course of a month I lost 2300$ on just bad beat after bad beat god it was awful. Flush beat by higher flush, Full house over full house on the river, All in with AA beat by KK just really running awful. Not to mention tilt set in and that's when things get really, really ugly...Now here we are in August and I'm up a little over a 1,000$. So i won the 2300 back and 1000$ more. Downswings do last. But if you play on tilt I can guarantee you and assure you it isn't a downswing....it's just that your playing on tilt and have no control and playing recklessly. A "real" downswing should only last maybe 5-8 buy ins. At most I would imagine. I made one heck of a comeback though.

Phil Ivey had 2015 as a downswing year. And C. Darwn2, the best player on pocket fives lost for 1 year straight on tournaments. I think if you are running bad after 60,000 hand you should consider your playing.

I don't know you or how you play but what I know for sure is that almost all gamblers suffer from a common malady – they overestimate themselves. While anyone who is losing at NL Hold'em after 500 hours or 15K hands live are probably kidding themselves when they blame their bad luck or bad cards, because it's much more likely they are not playing well enough to win. Maybe you are putting too much money on the table, maybe you are too optimistic on your draws against a made hand, maybe you "pay people off" deep into the hand or maybe you don't read well the second-action. I don't know what else to say for sure but one of these things will give you hard time to be a consistent winner. This I know for sure.

How often are you bluffing? How often do you win pots without showdown?

sometimes you need to quit playing and watch and learn. one of the best places to start is watching High Stakes Poker and Poker After Dark, you find some new ways to play by picking up ideas from the pro's. I am sure you heard there's a time and place for everything, know when to Holdem" and know when to foldem" know when to walk away and know when to watch some pro's. lol...I have won Tournaments with over 1100 people quite a few times ( play money tables) The trick is playing tighter than 2 midgets in a pair of fundies..lol
Peace" and Happy Bank Rolling...

you let people steal blinds?

How many times will it take for you to call one of the all in every hand until someone calls them? and what do you call with knowing that they must have nothing it's been every hand all in for 5 in a row, you call with any hand on the 6th or 7th all in in a row?
Just wondering, peace and happy bank rolling...

I always thought the same until my down swing on a particular site. I just couldn't win high equity hands. On another siteI run well. So is it a down swing or just losing on one site winning on other. Who knows, but once it's in your mind you can't win because your on a down swing. That alone will hold you back.
