So I had an extra 100 to blow, and wanted to play live poker. Didnt really have a bankroll or anything but I ended up buying in for 100 in a 1/2nl game and leaving with 487. Can i keep using that 487 as a bankroll if i keep my buy ins at a 100? Not really interested in playing online, and I know 20 buy ins are recommened. Guess im just asking for reassurance that this is ok lol I know i shouldnt but playing live is just so much more fun!

If we say that’s not enough will you not do it anyway [emoji6]

Short answer, no it’s not really enough but if that’s the game you want to play then go for it. If you lose it get some more money together and start again.

You don't have to have a certain "bankroll" to play. You read these pro-players stories and how many times did they have nada? You make your investments continue to grow then it's all good. You lose it then you start over.

If you plan to be a pro at poker, or make it a part-time job, you need to practice good bankroll management.
Money is the tool you use to perform your job, and in this job it is very easy to get unlucky and lose all your tools.

If you are playing for fun, and the joy of making a little profit sometimes, you don't need to worry about bankroll. Just don't bet more than you can afford.
Consider poker part of your entertainment budget.

If you keep making money at it you can make it a fun part-time job, like I have. Then you can worry about bankroll.

We are pretty similar. I also want to start playing live but I dont have any bankroll and I dont want to spend my pocket money, because Im not that rich. But nice upswing from the 100 to almost 500, I hope for the same.

You dont have to have any bankroll... Its better to have it but its also possible to play like this. Just look up how Tom Dwan or Doug Polk made fortune playing online, for example I think I heard Dwan only deposited 100 dollars ( or 10? Cant really remember) and now, he is playing the biggest possible stakes on planet with Chinese billionaires in Macau. You dont need to have bankroll if you are good and have some luck. But when you make some more money, make your bankroll and up something aside for life expenses.

GL to you my friend

Ultimately itd be nice to make some money off it, but at the same time, the bankroll isnt the “end” if i lose it, i can replenish it maybe a $100 a month

Depends on who you ask but for me, I like the trill of risk you know like I will have $50 and I'll play it in a game where the minimum buy in is $50, go big or go home if they say, so if I were you I'd play the half of it or all of it if you're not scared about losing it all and ready to win more, and then when it starts to hit a lot like $750-900 that's where I'll slow down and maybe play a smaller stakes because with that you could play a lot of poker already and the chances of winning more is a lot if you're playing more often even in lower stakes. one dollar at a time that's how you score LFG !!

I would suggest short stacking with that 480. If your cardroom does a 20bb min buy like mine does you could have 12 buy ins. Just make sure to read up on some short stack strategy.

As people allready said bankrollmanagement wise it is not ok. Id recomend playing online simply because you will have to invest less to build up from there. You could buy youreself a HUD plus having 100 buyins bankroll @ microstakes.

Now if livepoker is just youre thing, what stops you from taking just 5 more YOLO-shots investing 20 bucks? its not the best thing to do, but if you wanted to blow the money in the first place, just to make the experience, why not just go for it?

If you have a regular job, don't worry too much about bankroll requirements for low live stakes yet, just decide how much you can afford to play with and enjoy it. Many poker players started out like you and built a roll some how. You've already decided you can afford to replenish $100 a month. I don't know what games are available to you, but if you can find a regular $50 weekly tournament, just play that every other week and work on improving your game until you start crushing it, then you'll have a roll that you can invest in more serious and regular play if you choose. That was pretty much how I got into poker and became a more serious and regular winning, but amateur player.

The other thing I highly recommend if you have the availability where you live is playing online satellites to live events. Learn good satellite strategy and play satellites regular and you can soon find yourself going on some really fun adventures travelling around parts of your country or even the world you never even considered going to and all you need to pay for is transport and a hotel. Again, this was something I did a lot when starting out and I had some very nice wins for a very small investment.

Over the years I learned that poker is much more enjoyable and even profitable if your aim is to have fun, learn and travel as a hobby rather than just trying to make money.

I hope this helps, good luck

Good luck transforming that "487" bucks into 10 grand lol. Simply put, it won't happen. You had one good day that's it. Poker is a "gradual game" 1-2 is an extremely swingy game due to the: high amount of players in each hand, the calling ranges of playing with fish, and simple bet sizing. 487$ won't last long. I've played -1-2 for 6 months straight, 30 hours a week, 543 hours total. Ive had winning and losing months. After 15,000 to 20,000 hands I've lost 350$. Simply put you need a real bankroll to handle the variance of the game. 10 buy-in losing streaks are very possible.

Just thought Id update this thread, so the journey continues! Originally bought in for a 100, and now the bankroll is at 1.6k!!! Some luck involved because i happened to be in a bad beat jackpot. But awesome! Played 6 session, 4 of which were winning! Crazy how these things happen sometimes!

Just don't let it go to your head. Stay humble. Overconfidence is the best way to lose all your profits and more.

The first thing I learned from poker was that the real win comes in the long run, when you get too high up on a limit that you do not have the bankroll to play, the flying is going to depend more on luck than on ability.
