Did I play this right? Unexpected two-pair flopped on the button.

I'm pretty sure that I was unlucky and got donkeyed, but I'd like to know what other people more experienced think of what happened. Here's the story:

-4/2o on the button
-One person (let's call him Jack) called the BB, everyone else folded
-I called BB, BB checks - three to the flop (BB & Jack before me)
-flop comes up Q, 4, 2 offsuit
-BB bets 11BB, Jack calls
-I raised to 40BB
-BB folds, Jack calls
- 3 pops up on the turn
- Jack checks
- I bet 36BB effectively throwing him all in
- Jack calls with A/4 (9 outs, ~19% right? has to catch up from behind)
- Rivers a 5 and takes it

Did I play that wrong? Was it worth it for him to call or did I just get unlucky?

I don't think limping with four deuce offsuit is going to be profitable (even on the button).

After you catch this flop I like your raise on the flop and shove on the turn - Villain did not play the hand well but you probably shouldn't have been in there either.

Better luck next time! :D

I agree with DougPkrMonsta. Two mistakes happened here: one made by you and second by "Jack". First of all, I don't think you should've even played that hand. It's 42o, how often do you really get anything good with that? Not often. So don't play those kinds of hands, not even from the button. But you played it and that's fine, let's go with that. After that you played it right because you have two pairs and that board doesn't look too scary otherwise. The second mistake was obviously made by Jack who shouldn't have called his whole stack with only a gut shot and Ace high. What a cute little fish right there :D You should've folded already preflop but after that your play was fine. He just got lucky this time.

EDIT: I just realized that he also had a small pair but that basically doesn't change anything. He is still just a fish who got lucky.

Im agree with everyone else, if you are going to play 2-4o at least bet strong pf.

If was 24s i think is okey to limp.

You play it well post flop.

But like others says you shouldnt be there in first place.

Your mistake was not having strong bets before the flop so that the fishes folded their cards from there to aya your bet was good but you were already below

I don't think that betting strong before the flop would have even helped here. If someone is a fish like that "Jack" there, he would've most likely called almost every preflop raise because he's holding an ace and then continued calling after the flop because he hit a pair and a backdoor straight draw. That's why folding the hand in the first place would have been the best choice in my opinion. But yeah, people should definitely bet already preflop if they decide to play and someone limps before them. Just not with 42o.

I called BB

Don't limp pre-flop

Better would be fold, or raise your usual blind steal amount plus an extra big blind to charge the limper (if you think you have some chance to make him fold), then practice some pot control after the flop until you hit a huge hand.
