Is it bad etiquette to do this?

So i had been going pretty good, up a bit from my starting buy-in, and then win a few huge pots that put me up around 500 BB. I get up and leave, happy to come out that far ahead after a short session. I didn't feel like there was any reason to stay and keep playing, i was already past my normal goal.

I then decided after a quick break to sit down again, and bought in for the norm. One of the guys berated me for doing that, I guess it seemed like i was just pocketing a grand and then buying back in to ensure a profit?

It depends on how long you were gone and if you sat back at the same stakes. Most cardrooms would require you to buy in the same amount you left with.

Edit: yes it is bad etiquette

Yes, it is bad etiquette - to berate players for doing that.

What are the house rules? Nobody likes a Hit and Run artist. If you stood up the hand after you won big (because there is no rule against it), cashed out and returned TO THE SAME TABLE ???? shortly after, then yeah, I can see why players would be mad, wishing it was the Old West so they could just shoot you, etc. Just because there is no specific rule against it, doesn't mean it's acceptable behaviour. You can sit out of a game and return to your stack if that's what you want to do (max time varies, but thirty minutes or so is normal). Or, you could play a reasonable amount of time after winning (again, subjective) and walk away. Or, you could play at a different table when you return.

The vast majority of rooms have specific rules about this. Most often you need to wait somewhere around 1-2 hours after picking up your chips before coming back in with less than you cashed out with. Otherwise if it's sooner than that you must sit down with whatever you cashed out for, though this is difficult to enforce and the rule is more in place to just discourage people from doing it, not to actually count what people had and then buy them in for the same.

In my mind you didn't do anything wrong by getting up, then after deciding to sit back down. It's kind of another thing entirely if you planned for this - then you're just sort of trying to get around the rule, but that's not my impression of why you did it.

In general just know that anyone you sat with who sees this happen will assume it was on purpose, and be annoyed. This is why it's generally better to leave your chips at the table while you take a break, then just come back. If your chips happen to have been picked up, then get them at the cage or front desk, and just come back and buy in based on whatever the rule is where you play.

I would say the larger lesson here is that being well versed in the rules at your home casino (or wherever you play) is pretty important in a wide range of scenarios.

Sage advice, but I was hoping for a Moody Rant. :(

Sometimes the etiquette is just used to control you so you lose sense of your self interest at the table. I usually like to do the most douchebag thing I can think of without breaking the rules.

Follow the house rules. Don't mind the etiquette because often people will only be happy if you turn into an ATM at the table their happiness is not your concern.

Don't ever play at the Joilet, IL Hollywood Casino they have terrible rules.

House Rules

Like people have pointed out there is definitely different house rules that would avoid this situation but me personally I would have waited at least a couple hands maybe even a good half hour before leaving.

I waited around 10 minutes, went home for about 15 or 20, fed the dog and came back. I personally felt like that was enough time to not be considered bad. I definatley could understand the guys i stacked feeling like they were being wronged though.

I've had to leave games earlier than planned before. In the instances where I may have been up a decent amount, I would always at least announce my intention to leave the game following an additional orbit. The timing of your exit seems more like a hit and run combined with the fact you returned so soon after leaving and bought in for less than you left with.

Poor etiquette but it doesn't seem it was intentional. You live and you learn :)

Depends if you set back down at the same table or not. I know I would be jacked if you left and sat back down at my table again within an hour.whether you had taken any chips from me or not.

Most card rooms require at least an hour of sitting out before buying back-in for smaller than you cashed out. See this happen at busy poker rooms: Player cashes out and goes outside for 10 minutes, comes back in and specifically ask not to sit at a certain table. Which is the one he just left. a lot of players notice this and call them out. Good rooms will not let this happen.
Thus improper etiquette.

Are you sure that there are no restrictions about that in your casino?

Normally that's not even allowed, atleast at my place

the way im looking at it. is we are poker players and sometimes the only way 2 leave ahead is to do exactly that. you can lose your winnings faster then you won all of it. i been there so many times wher i have had went from say $150 to 900 then i give it all back in 1 hand thinking those ACES were going to stay ahead.. a good player KNOWS WHEN TO QUIT!!!

Etiquette ?? You lost, suck it up.

At pokerstars I don't believe you could come back shortly to the 'same' table with the minimum buy in. Am I wrong? However, you do have the right to cash out whenever you want and anyone who objects should suck it up. They shouldn't expect you to stay until you give them their loses back.

Most rooms will have set rules against doing this. I disagree with the players who get angry about the hit and run player who doubles up quick and leaves. You have every right to quit whenever you want. But if decide to come back in only a few minutes put all your chips back on the table.

It varies a lot from place to place, but I would play some more hands before leaving the table.

The issue isn't the leaving so much as the coming back so soon for less chips.

yes this is frowned upon. you generally should come back with the same amount of chips you left with unless it's a very long break (not just a dinner break long). Even if they don't have specific rules the players won't like it.

If some of the same players were still in the room I'd go ahead and buy back in for the amount I left with, or just call it a day if I don't feel comfortable gambling with that much in front of me.

I am new to cash games and the whole ratholing rules and etiquette. The problem is leaving after a big win or coming back after you secured that big win? Or both are considered bad?

both. it's not written in stone.

if you win a big pot it's bad etiquette to pack up within a few minutes. if you wait 30-90 mins it's probably fine.

this matters more and more the bigger the game and/or the smaller the poker community you're playing in.

if it's vegas strip $1/2 just hit n run the whole strip. nobody really cares.

if theres 1 or 2 games within an hour of your house don't hit n run or rat hole. if you're playing $5/10 invitation home games don't hit n run or rat hole
