This hasn't happened, but for some reason I can't get this situation out of my head. Here it is:

So there are 13 players at the table. The stacks range anywhere from $500-5,000. It's 2/4 NL but the blinds are just a technicality because every pot will be raised pre-flop. The table consists of LAGs and LPs with very wide ranges. I'm out of position and I get dealt pocket rockets. I see this playing out a couple of different ways:

1. I raise it to $30. 5 other people call and a flush draw comes up or something else that scares me away on the flop. I'm comfortable with this situation. Either I win this hand in the variety of different ways that are possible (probably by eventually going all in), or I have to fold my rockets. The latter is not fun but at least I only lost $30.

2. I limp in and the pot gets raised for me. When it comes back to me, I go all in and put my $500 in. I get called by 4 other people and it's off to the races with me in front. I'm obviously the favorite to win this pot but I could get unlucky.

Which situation is best? If I had a little bit bigger of a BR then the second option would be a no brainer, but because it's not, then the first option becomes a little bit more attractive, a little less risky.

What does everybody think?

I think all the same first version better-you're doing a raise on the flop cards and doing further conclusions as you play better than just to lure rivals call and then lose money if someone catches Seth.

2nd option get it all in as the favorite no brainer, doesnt matter if you get unlucky or not in the long run it will be the better option

1st option if you raise to 30 and get several callers whatever the flop you wont know what to do unless you flop AAA

In a game with that level of craziness going on, get it in preflop. Like rhombus said, unless you catch an A, you will be faced with a decision in which you need to question whether an over pair is actually good against the variety of hands that are likely to come along. AA is best played against a single opponent, allowing a lot of hands to come along is a surefire way to get AA cracked.

This is one of those weird hypothetical questions where I choose none of the above

You should start with option 2. If you have position someone should be raising in front based on take dynamics described, and it sounds like the raise will be large. However even a standard 4bb makes it $16 to you.

Now 3 bet to $50-55, if they'll call more go larger. Congrats, you have 10% of effective stacks in preflop and should happily commit with your overpair on any flop against aggro monkeys
