I ahve always played very much on instinct in live poker games but when it comes to online play I am much more conservative in nature. I often feel I should call a big bet but fold because I dont want to make the big mistake but find if I had of called I would have been right and won the pot. I am not sure what it whether it is because I am newish to online poker or because I dont get a feel for it because I cant see people.

Can anyone relate to this experience or am I all alone?

I try to play on instinct for difficult decisions and play with math on easy decisions. So obviously calling big bets would be a difficult decision so you are going to have to rely on instincts. The only thing you can do is try to hone in your instincts and constantly practice to strengthen them. Another thing you can do is focus on the play of others even when you are not in a hand and try to guess what they are playing and when you do get to see their cards you can see how well you are reading the players at the table at that particular point in time!

Your online instincts will come. I don't have them yet but feel them getting sharper the more I play. It will just take a few thousand hands of seeing how people bet, raise, wait to call, etc. You have probably played alot of hands live and have developed your instincts. Playing live it is easier to get because you see everthing they do, and if you are good at reading people in general then you will do better at reading them in poker.

Well if you say that most of the time your feelings are right, then you can
say also that there is instinct in online poker. Thats the first analisis. What
could this instinct be? Well a combination of timing, size of the raise
and the nature of the hand, what cards are on the board, among other
things like what happened in previous hands and the state of the person
at that very moment. Plus if its cash or tourney. You can definitly say
that you can read people in online poker. I mean its nothing like a real
game of poker, which is what i prefer, but online poker is the next best
thing.
Now why you act the way you do is totally up to you. If you do good in
real poker by playing with your instinct, you should definitly incorporate
that in your online poker game cause there is definitly instinct involved
in online poker. When I say instinct, I mean the feeling you get that
makes you believe someone as something, or doesn't, WHEN logical
aspects of the game or takin into consideration SUBCONCIOUSLY... cause
if it were conciously that would be just basic reading, which is actually
very verrry important in both poker games.

Eh, when I play 6max and not so many tables, I think a fair bit of it is instinct. more like trusting your reads

I use instinct balanced with good judgement. Seperating out what is something I want to do vs what my instints are telling can take some doing. :)

I am excellent at reads in live games and pretty good at reads on line. I am always absorbing information I am unaware of absorbing. I think this includes betting patterns, time it takes to bet, etc. Then a play happens and my instincts give me a signal based on information I didn't know I absorbed, live or online.

I am trusting my instincts more and more. Sometimes seeing the action afterwards and realizing my instincts were on target validates my feeling and builds my confidence.

To me instinct is a lot harder online then live. Especially when playing multi-tables. I use good old math and bet patterns more then anything.
