Hi everyone. NLHE 6 Max ZOOM cash game on pokerstars.
I was wondering if it's possible to make a living off cash games. If so what is the minimum buy in I should be playing at to make at least $10 an hour?
All I have is $200 to my name because I'm on welfare and I'm finding it hard to find a job.
Any tips or advice would be very helpful like bankroll management or starting hands that should be avoided.

My friend,
You cannot make $10/hour with a $200 bankroll. The natural fluctuation and the blinds will consume that unless you get some early winnings. ZOOM is a good game if you have the fortitude and wait for super premium starting hands that can flop big. Settle for no less.

Play only 22+, AK, and ATs+. Just keep folding everything because in a second you get new cards. Why play medium hands when you can exchange them for premium?

What Che said ^

In order to make that kind of money hourly you will also need a big starting bankroll. Downswings will happen and you will have to survive them, if you going to be doing it for a living you cannot risk playing with such a big % of your bankroll at a time. For now with 200 BR and since you have no income as you stated, stick to micro stakes like 2NL and learn the ways of cash games, there's a lot of in-depth guides to them all over the internet, google is your friend, take advantage of it!

Hello, it isn´t a good way to start playing just to make money, in fact, you should let it happen naturally, by studying the game and all the probability involved. In poker you have to deal with the variance, some days, weeks, you´re going to loose money playing correct, so take it easy... Start playing every day, to easily replace your job, it´s not a good idea.

If you had $ 200 of capital, you could earn $ 10 an hour - millions of people would only be doing it. In reality, everything is much more complicated. :D

As much as great as it sounds, 10 bucks an hour is kind of a long shot if you don't have the knowledge required to play at those stakes. You may be lucky at first but variance will hit you hard at some point or another. Build your bankroll slowly from the lower stakes (that's what I'm doing) and follow bankroll management rules. You will experience the basic level of playing poker, you will learn from your mistakes without much loss and you will gain much needed experience to play on higher stakes to make that much money.

Your bankroll is not big enough yet to make an hourly high enough to support you. Run it up slowly or you risk busting it quickly.

This really is a solid post.

Well my bankroll is more like $400 but I'm not willing to spend all that on poker.
For cash games should I use the 20 buy in rule or the 50 buy in rule?
If I use the 20 buy in rule I can play 5NL with $100.
If I use the 50 buy in rule I can play 2NL with $100.
I have played both 2NL and 5NL and personally I like 5NL better but I'm not sure if 20 buy ins is enough to make profit.
I'm playing to make money but I also enjoy playing as a hobby.
What do you guys think?

I think if you are a beginner yoy should play in tables of 1% of your stack.

What you are asking for is a recipe for disaster. Why would you blow your welfare money on poker? How about cutting your expenses while looking for a good job, or, even better, go back to school, get some education, it will benefit you the most in the future. Ways to cut your expenses: if you are paying rent, find roommates to share the rent with, learn to dumpster dive in order to save on food money, dump TV subscription, get the cheapest internet, get a prepaid cellphone and use it only for important phone calls. Hell, even panhandling is more profitable than playing poker!

So what you are saying is that it's not possible to start building a bankroll with $100? I forgot to mention that I'm a person with a disability so working isn't really an option for me. That's what I mean by I'm having a hard time finding a job. School is too expensive and I have been to college but ended up dropping out because I have a learning disability too. I'm good at cards though.

It would be very difficult to make $10/hr at 2-5NL woth only $200 bankroll. I wont tell you what to do with your money, but whenever I deposit i think of it as good as gone(i only play Mtt's) and if im lucky enough to win, im happy

Usually, when you start playing cash games with the plan that you earn big money, then you lose everything. You need to play, have fun and money will come. To make for living of poker, it is possible but you need to be really good and to invest some money.

You are naive in your thoughts about winning poker. Not everything and even not very much, you can say many just lose their money in poker. If I were you, I would never play for money. This is a very small capital. If you are a super player, then the flag is in your hands and you will earn money first.

Alright thanks I will think about switching to tournaments even though I'm not a big fan. From what I am reading on this thread cash games are just for fun and not for making money.

All depends on how much respect you have for that 200 bucks. If you are aggressive and a risk taker in general, then try to get an early start and build yourself up. You may very well lose it all and have to be prepared for that. I think zoom would be a good option

It is theoretically possible to do this, but you need to be a very solid poker player. It also depends on how aggressive you are and how good your reads are on the other person.

I like doing a TAG strategy. Were I you, I'd only risk 2$ buy ins. It's a bit safer in terms of managing your limited funds.

Again as everybody else said, you'd probably be better off using that 200$ for something else. But if you -had- to go forward this idea, pick either a very ABC and tight style of play or if you're better, TAG.

If that is the only money you have, and don't have more coming soon, I would no recommend playing poker with it. but it is our money and you can do as you please. If you choose to go ahead with this, start at 2nl and grind it up from there. You will get an idea soon enough if you will be able to make money playing.

Invest in yourself. poker should be a hobby, not a career choice. You're money will be gone and you'll have nothing.
