Lately I have been making the mistake of checking the turn to much, giving free cards and getting burned on the river. How do you handle the turn? Bet hard if you have something decent, the nuts, draw? I'm new to cash, switched from tourney and the turn is deff a leak in my game. Thanks everyone!

I had identified this as a leak in my game a while back and took steps to correct this.

1) A lot of online players will float the flop with any two, especially over cards, and look for you to check the turn to bet big to push you off your hand. Easiest way to combat that is to look at your position, the texture of the board and bet the turn around the same percentage as your flop bet more often. Those that float often fold the turn.

2) You must punish draws - if a draw hits the flop but misses the turn, often if you bet aggressively on the turn the draws will give up, whereas draws will often call the flop as there are more chances to improve. Harder to call if you only have one card left

3) Many people are calling stations and you can extract value by betting the turn and going to the river, especially if you have position on them.

You need to vary your game by mixing it up - betting your draws sometimes, but not all the time. The more you know about your opponent the better.

Bet big with big hands since i want to be able to get a bigger bet on the river.
Also If he is on a draw on turn i want to get value now before he misses his draw on river

I am usually betting my draws and premium hands on the turn and checking my medium strength hands. But it definitely depends on the opponent and board texture. I am mostly a tournament player so I find at the lower limit cash games people are much more willing to call if they have anything.

Agree that you must make draws pay if they did not improve.. But, If I am on a semi-bluff, such as a apparent flush draw that makes on the turn, I will drop a bomb and watch them scatter.

If I am on a table that is inhabited by aggressive players(Donks abound here, especially in the Freeroll events), and I have called with perhaps less than optimal cards and hit the flop, I will check it and see if one of diarrhea better will make a move.

If you just started playing, I would advise you to play the minimum number of starting hands! Only play with higher cards, create the image of a secret player, and sometimes you can turn on the bluff! You need to get used to the new format of the game. Restrain yourself not to play a lot of hands, and then you will not have a problem.

Turn plays are very subjective it's almost impossible to tell you 'what to do' without a realistic scenario to work with.

Generally if you don't know where you stand and you were the first aggressor you should c-bet again, but if you're worried go a bit heavier and see where you stand. Feeler bets are a good way to see if he's trapping you. It's better to give away a little on purpose than give away a lot on a suckout. Information is worth paying for and it may cost you now but it'll pay for itself later as long as you remember it.

There turn is the best spot to bet, or as i like to call it "tax" the draws and weaker hands.

The odds of people hitting the draw on the river are half as good now, so make them pay to suck out.

If your going to check any street, check the flop with good but not power house hands. Then make a nice pot size bet on the turn. I use this play often when i have top pair top kicker.

Hope this helps, good luck out there!

If it bothers you then you should understand what you do. If your hand is good enough then you should value bet there. If it's good only for the turn and the river may change everything then you should bet (and the bet must be of a good size) in order to protect your current hand and make the next card more expensive to see for your opponents. If you have any kind of draw then decide yourself what to do. Any decision should follow an aim.

excellent advise...since these types of players are gonna flaot and attack the only reason you should check the betting is to induce a bluff and collect the pot

until then you should be betting for value on every street I feel

If I Have the Absolute nuts on the Turn , I can Easily check in hopes that my opponent will catch something on the river to bluff with. In the End it all depends on the table you are at and who you are playing with. Usually unless I know Im beat I will bet the turn to see my overall position in the hand or If my hand gets stronger on the Turn.

If the board is a scary one I am not checking my good hands on the turn. No need in giving away a free card that potentially will cost me a lot or counterfeit my previously made hand. Many players will pay for that draw anyhow, so there’s no need in giving it for free. Plus you must protect yourself from the inevitable disaster river. If the river is favorable you now get to put another bigger bet in. I am looking to increase the pot every street when I’m in a favorable position while minimizing the risk of people getting lucky cheaply. Of course the river isn’t always cooperative but you can avoid that by getting a fold before you see that dreaded river card. Winning a medium pot with a strong turn play/bet, is much more appealing then going broke or face a hard decision on the rivered suck out or possibility of...

Charge your opponent for their draw - whether you are strong or not.

You can't actually make them fold - all you can do is make it more expensive.

Good luck !
