I basically always raise if I'm first to enter, and cold call any normal sized raise. I usually call 3 bets too... (only if it's less than 10% of effective stacks to call) I justify it by thinking that flopping a set will have a better chance of getting paid off by a bigger hand. But I never try to win the pot with my small PP in a 3bet pot when I don't hit the set.

That's how I play 'em. I think calling too many 3bets might be a slight leak, since the 5/10 rule states that if it's between 5-10% of effective stacks it is a judgement call, and I judge that it's a good call around 90% of the time.

Opening sPPs is good, and also flatting them vs strong ranges is good for setmining purposes, especially when you know you'll likely get paid by a numpty villain who doesn't pot control and can't release his overpair.

However, calling 3bets to setmine is a disaster tbh. You need way more behind than you think. The amount of times you don't hit a set + the amount of times they are light + the amount of times they have a premium PP but an A flops + the amount of times you get beat even when you do hit a set = do not call 3bets to setmine under normal circumstances (e.g. 100bbs deep).

Don't ever call a 3-bet looking to setmine when the call is going to be for 10% of your stack. It is such a horrible play . . . they always seem to get me with it though . . .

The reason for not doing so is that even if you hit your set you might not get paid off, in which case you are just burning money. I mean for example, you raise 33 from MP and I 3-bet from the button with 75s. You call and flop your set, however you are never going to get paid off unless you cooler me. So for all the times I'm not getting coolered you lose money, and not just a little bit but 10% of your stack.

The general rule of thumb is that you can profitably setmine in 3-bet pots when your opponent has 20x the bet left behind. So if you have to call 1$ to see the flop you should only do so when they have 20$ or more left behind. These greater implied odds make it profitable because when you do get paid off it is for twice as much as you would get by calling with your current strategy and thus meaning you only have to hit your set and get paid off half as many times.

Edit - That mofo Cafeman beat me to it

Dont ever do this^^^

Im either opening them or calling a single raise with them. Never calling a 3bet unless I know I can maybe outplay villian post but usually just folding to 3bet

Good hand to 3bet light too if you are against laggy players stealing who can fold to 3bets. Easy to play postflop.

It's situation dependent of course (who is 3betting, what seats you are both in, how the 3bettor perceives you etc) but yeah 99, TT and JJ can be good for flatting 3bets.
