Greetings CCers,

I need your help. I was laid off on Dec. 5, 2013. Being totally honest, I was happy about being laid off because I hated my job (as an actuary at a large international insurance company). Corporate America did not suit me, so, instead of finding another job in Corporate America, I have decided to play poker for a living.

I live in the Philadelphia Area but expect to make my living playing online. I will be playing at Bovada because they reliably pay US players and they easily have the most traffic of all US facing poker sites. I have been a heads-up specialist for the past several years but I won't be playing HU at Bovada because the player anonymity prevents appropriate game selection. Therefore, I will be be playing NL hold'em cash games to pay my bills. I am a pretty experienced poker player (I started playing online in 2002 and have played multiple millions of hands online) and I have always been a winning player (or else I wouldn't be trying to play poker for a living). Having said that, I have limited cash game experience. I started out playing limit hold'em online and, when that became boring, I transitioned to HU play. I have played some NL hold'em cash games online, but I wouldn't consider myself a cash game expert by any stretch of the imagination --- and that is where you all come in.

I need to MAKE MYSELF into a cash game expert, and pretty stinking quickly. I am currently getting coaching from fellow CCer John Anhalt and I'm confident that he will help me mold my game so that I'm a consistent winner. He has other students and other responsibilities, however, so I can't rely exclusively on him to make this work. As a result, I am going to begin posting hands here looking for any and all constructive feedback. I am not just going to post hands that involve difficult spots/decisions, as I would like feedback on everything: hand selection, bet sizing, positional awareness, my stats, and, most importantly, missed opportunities and/or identifying poor/weak decisions. I am hopeful that with John's help and with the help of the more experienced cash gamers here at CC that I will be crushing mid-stakes online (200NL and 400NL) in no time.

I am currently playing 100NL and 200NL at Bovada and using the Ace Poker Solutions utility to load my hands into Holdem Manager 2. Starting tomorrow, I will begin posting hands here. I have 116 hands marked for review in HM2, and I will post 10-15 per day (in no particular order) until I get through them all --- adding more as I continue to play. All posted hands will be from Bovada at 100 or 200 NL. Since Bovada caps the number of cash tables you can sit at at four, I may begin playing at juicy stakes as well if their traffic continues to improve (which has been the case as their payout history continues to improve).

Thanks very much for your time and consideration, and I look forward to picking your brains to help make me the best player I can be.

Best of luck on the felt, and be well.

-HooDooKoo

Good luck in your endeavours.

FYI Hand 5 shows winner has aces and nines when he actually had aces and tens.

I am no expert...but as a rule of thumb when trying to minimize your losses....I try to think like ''if I don't have it, someone does''. I'd rather take a 3 dollar loss by folding than call something knowing that there's a better hand sitting right in front of me.

Here are four hands (3 tough spots) from a recent session:

Hand 16:

PokerStars Hand #2808231845: Hold'em No Limit ($0.50/$1) - 2014/01/23 20:15:07
Table '#6759035' 6-max Seat #4 is the button
Seat 1: UTG ($86.65 in chips)
Seat 2: UTGplus1 ($298.55 in chips)
Seat 3: UTGplus2 ($101.64 in chips)
Seat 4: Dealer ($231.38 in chips)
Seat 5: Small Blind ($96 in chips)
Seat 6: Hero ($128.50 in chips)
Small Blind: posts small blind $0.50
Hero: posts big blind $1
*** HOLE CARDS ***

UTGplus2: folds
Hero: folds
Uncalled bet ($61.65) returned to UTG
UTG: shows [Qc Tc]

Seat 2: UTGplus1 mucked [5h Kh]
Seat 3: UTGplus2 mucked [9h 6c]
Seat 4: Dealer (button) mucked [2d 9s]
Seat 5: Small Blind (small blind) mucked [Jd Kd]
Seat 6: Hero (big blind) mucked [Qh As]

As it turns out, I made the right decision here --- but what do we think about how I played the turn? In a three-way pot after a 75% pot bet on the flop, I figured it was pretty likely one of the callers was on a flush draw.

Hand 17:

PokerStars Hand #2808228783: Hold'em No Limit ($0.50/$1) - 2014/01/23 20:09:04
Table '#6759035' 6-max Seat #3 is the button

Seat 4: Small Blind (small blind) mucked [5h 9d]
Seat 5: Big Blind (big blind) mucked [Td 3d]
Seat 6: Hero mucked [Ac Ad]

This has to be a fold, right? IMO, the shove is two-pair minimum --- and likely much stronger.

Hand 18:

PokerStars Hand #2808226346: Hold'em No Limit ($0.50/$1) - 2014/01/23 20:04:06

Should I have just folded to the flop raise? I felt the board was pretty dry and a lot of hands might raise hoping to steal the pot here, so a fold seemed weak but re-raising seemed imprudent. After the turn bet I thought the BB probably had something (except it was pretty unlikely he'd hit a double-paired board), so I called. In retrospect, I almost certainly should have folded here since I'm a huge dog to Tx, 7x, and any pocket pair that's still betting. I only beat straight draws, two overs, and air. Thoughts?

Hey - wish you loads of luck.

If you want help with hands post them 1 at a time in the hand analysis forum - members will see them there and they don't usually respond when more than 1 hand is posted in 1 post. :)

We don't mind you posting them here - just don't expect to get much help like that.

If you find a really good one take a shot at Phil Galfond giving you feedback:

Debi --- Thanks for your well wishes, and for your advice.

I'm going to stick with this format for now because I'd like to have a long-term hand analysis thread as opposed to one-off single hand threads like generally get posted in the hand analysis thread. I'm hoping that enough people will subscribe to this thread that it will succeed this way. If this doesn't work, though, I'll take your advice and post individual hands in the hand analysis thread.

I also got some feedback about posting hands in a more readable format, so I'm reposting hands 16 through 19 using flopturnriver.com.

Thanks, and be well.

Despite the fact that I was wrong, this has to be a fold, right? IMO, the shove is two-pair minimum --- and likely much stronger. Keep in mind that I'm playing on Bovada, which is a double-edged sword. 1. This doofus called my UTG raise on the button with 96 off; but 2. I didn't have enough history on him at the time to realize that he's a doofus.

The thing is you open raised the button. This is a standard practice in cash game poker and generally players can do this with hands far worse than 88.
Did your opponent know this? I don't know. But they check raised you on paired board. Think about what that check raise was trying to accomplish. If you call, and your opponent buts again, are you going to call down and be a hero? So many cards help your opponent (even if they are trying to bluff). If the turn is an ACE that card is very good for your opponent.
The thing is, I myself would have been HIGHLY skeptical of the check raise on the flop. It just feels fishy.
Also note that the player bets less than half pot on the turn, and that is an EXTREME red flag. I think you should have
A. fold to the check raise on the flop? A bit nitty but not the worst option. However, I think I would have called just to see the turn and see what my opponent would do. Sometimes bad players will do this and the turn will go check - check. At that point you can comfortably bet the river for value.
B. 3bet the flop - I don't like this option very much but I think a case can be made for it. the bottom line is YOU ARE ahead of your opponents range. I have played enough poker to know this spot. I've seen it a thousand times. Sometimes they have trips but normally they don't. The problem is you have draw blockers (88) so hands like 89, J8 become less likely. (a good player could check raise with these types of hands)
C. Call - its $10.00 more to see what your opponent does on the turn, and you could also potentially bink an 8 or gain outs with a 9.
Option C is standard but sometimes the other two are warranted.
However, the turn bet is really scary to me and I believe that your mistake came on the turn. Think about that bet for a minute, at that point I think you really have to ask yourself "If I call this bet what am I going to do if this guy bombs the river?"
I think you should have check folded turn. My thoughts here are pretty jumbled but I hope you can extract something from them. This is just my prospective. I really don't see any mistakes until the turn. honestly? a lot of the time you are probably AHEAD on the turn, and I think you knew that, but I just don't see how you can continue

Hand 16, of course snap fold with TP. Well played. I would not bet turn either. One of the villains has to have a FD.

A-2s hand:

I like your play overall. However, reraise the river. Villain obviously likes his hand, and he is not folding. People rarely raise the river without a monster hand (well sometimes). What do we have to lose? If he folds, big deal. But you missed some value there. So I think flatting flatting the river is not optimal.

Oh yeah, in.

Hand 19:

Villain could c/r flop with a 10x hand, he doesn't have to have the 7. The board is kinda dry, and he could think his 10x is good. But I don't think he does this with air.

You really have only two outs. Fold flop I guess. Done with the hand after c/r.

A2dd is a tad thin on the river when he takes a bet/call, call, raise line like this, but I still 3bet here. Doubt he ever shows up with 77. Also fwiw I probs raise pre to his limp and take initiative OOP.

Looks like it might work for you anyway - got a few good members in here now. :)

Regardless, I appreciate all your time.

My first post ITT, and I already misread a HH. I did not notice board was paired in A-2s hand (I looked for it too). Now I see why you flatted the river.

I don't think my advice would have changed though. He can still call us with worse IMO. But flatting the river is a bit more prudent (and might be the best choice, who knows).

I do that occasionally. I read the HH too quickly or something and miss important details. I am going to try and pay better attention.

Anyways, I forgot to mention before - good luck with this new chapter in you life. I hope you never have to return to the soul-sucking rat race.

Karozi,

I appreciate your thoughts and I agree with all of them.

I didn't fold the flop for two reasons: 1. As you said, I believed I was ahead of villain's range; and 2. Folding the flop sets a bad precedent, because any good player paying attention can put me in this spot too often. IMO, it was worth calling the small raise to let other players at the table know that I can't be knocked off my hand this easily.

The more I think about this now, the more I think that a small three-bet was the right play. If I get 4-bet, I'm done. If I 3-bet and get called, I'm nearly certain that I'm behind and can let the hand go. As played, I think that folding the turn was a better play than my call --- even if, as you said, I was ahead.

Thanks for your thoughts.

Eh I can only think of one hand that plays this way that we are beat by and thats 44. And maybeeeee 77 a super small % of the time. Therefore I think its a small mistake to flat the rr on river.
