Harrington on Cash Games Discussion Thread

Okay, so I know people got into discussing HoH, which I enjoy, but I really would rather focus on Harrington on Cash Games, as I'm a ring gamer. Since Dakota did such a good job, I'm going to shamelessly attempt to copy her HoH setup.

If this is something people want to do, please respond here, and let me know if you have the books already, or if you are ordering them. If enough people already have the book and are ready to go on this, then we can start sooner, but for now the tentative schedule is as follows:

Part 1-3 discussion: January 3 - January 17
Part 4 discussion: January 18 - February 1
Part 5 discussion: February 2 - February 16

Parts 1 and 2 are more basic concepts, so they are being lumped into one three part start to this schindig. I will be re-reading and taking notes starting now, and I look forward to discussing.

One last thing, if anybody finds good prices on the books, please let everyone know so they can join in with us. So far I've found the best at Amazon, both books for $46 total plus free shipping!

I have read the harrigton books...he is one of my fav. players..I might even have a tighter image than he. I would def. tell poker players to read his books!

Great Idea. Seeing how Harrington on Hold'em for tourney players have become such poker classics, I am looking forward to reading the Cash Game books and to participating in your upcoming forum. At Amazon you can get both volumes for $46.14 with no shipping costs. At Barnes & Noble.com , they cost $55.92 for both with free shipping. So, Buy.com appears to have the best buy, LOL.

I've considered purchasing the HOH Cash Games books myself (were next on the list actually) and have heard mostly good reviews about them.
After reading the comment above, I'm thinking I'll grab NLHE T&P for now as I can pick it up through my local library on an inter-library book loan (yah.. they've gotten to know me quite well over there, often having taken out the same book a few times and have loaned dozens of books thru them now, lol... their response to my 'next' request(s), "Do they actually have another book on poker out there?"... of course they do. Maybe I should start hitting up a different library... ha ha ha.

Just wanted to throw this comment in here as it's usually what I do prior to purchasing a poker book. Books are usually only available for inter-library loan if copyright is prior to 2007. NLHE T&P falls into that time frame (2006).

For others wanting to read some good stuff online, in regards to Cash Game (specifically 6-maxNL), Ryan Fee's 6-max Strategy Guide ('e-book') is a great read (imo)).

SSH is a limit book. It's by Miller & Sklansky so I'm sure it's very good but I don't play limit holdem.

By 'low stakes', I thought he meant like $1 - $10. There is nothing in the title OR the table of contents that says limit (!!!). In fact, the first top reviewer mentions 'low limit'. Again I'm thinking 'stakes'. It's limit (as in 'fixed limit') or it's pot limit or it's not. Sheesh. Thanks for the help. And I missed those 2 books you links to above, will check them out. Thanks much!

Cool.. well seeing as you have read HoH cash before, lets do that discuss first and then take a polll of what book to discusss next.

I think we would all learn more by focusing our efforts as a comunity on one book than splintering off onto different routes.

But yeah... after HoH cash .. lets take this further.

Great post OP.. was thinking of doing the same thing with a discussion on HoH cash.. but have been living in new zealand for a few months and the book was sat in my book case the other side of the world!!!

I agree Stu, we should keep these discussions going, and I'd definitely be up to a discussion on NLHTAP as well, along with just about any other book deemed valuable towards improving one's game.

Does Professional No-Limit Hold'em vary that much from NLHTAP? I'll probably end up buying it either way, but since Ed Miller was a co-author for NLHTAP, it seemed the two would likely be extremely similar.

Harrington always gives solid advice in his books, though its tailored more towards a tight aggressive approach. Hard to argue with a bracelet holder though.

Well as a start, if there are any particular topics in the current section you feel are of particular usefulness, or that you've had difficulty fully grasping, bring it up in the thread.

You could also address things that you like or dislike, approve or disapprove of and why. I can't stress how important this part is. If you don't give your reasoning as to why you feel the way you do, then it doesn't help others to see your line of thought. By explaining the reason behind your opinion others can see the logic, or perhaps can show you an error you made in your original thought process, which is beneficial to all involved in the conversation.

As an example of how one would go about addressing a particular topic:

Harrington says that you want to check middling hands, which he later refers to as anything from overpairs to underpairs (pg. 120). However I play mainly at $25nl and I don't feel this rule holds true there. Opponents are often calling three barrel bets with top pair weak kicker, or even 2nd pair. Due to this apparent shift in our opponent's calling range, middling hands that should be checked need instead be top pair (jack or lower kicker) and underpairs. Tptk can and should still be played rather aggressively (though generally not for stacks) to take advantage of opponent's loose calls, as well as overpairs, which can even win stacks from players who severely overvalue tptk themselves.

Then after this post is made, people could share their opinion on what I've just said, or bring up their own insight on a totally different facet of the material currently up for discussion.

Hope this helps people with some ideas of how they can go about starting some debates!
