Hey guys, I have been playing NLHE for about a year. Not a huge winner by any means but have bought myself some nice things from poker (ie: xboxone) I win pull out money and start over. I want to be done with that and really make a good run at it. My question is what kind of goals have you all set for yourself being in the lower limits. I know you are not supposed to be results oriented but I really do want a monetary goal as well. Were your goals based on sessions, days, weeks months, years? any thoughts on this would be great thank you guys

PS I will have $100 most likely on bovada as that is where I made the most money.

Making monetary goals can put unecessary stress on yourself.
imo, you're way better off to set goals for volume you hope/plan on playing (how many sessions/hours... or mtt's/sng's, etc. Along with a certain # of hours of study each week/month (< whatever that might be for you). Years ago at one point I think I studied almost as often as I played (I was passionate about it though).

Personally I find trying to play enough volume to clear deposit bonuses or some other type of promo can be helpful for setting volume goals for myself.

Good luck with your goals. Personally I think that goals are good and keep you focused on the task at hand.
My goal for online poker is just to be able to play and keep occupied since this is just a hobby for me. As long as I have some money in my account and do not have to deposit I am happy.
If I want to make money I pour over the stock market stats and buy and sell but that is not much fun.

Well I think that you must set yourselfs goals all the time,of course you must adjust them to your bankroll. I personally play sit and go tourn and i only play levels where i can have 20-25 buy in. My goal is to move on bigger sng when i increase my bankroll enough

Agree with this. If you set money goals and dont hit it can cause tilt by itself. The main idea is to have fun and generally play some good poker. There can be times when you are trying hard to win and get coolered so just have to accept it as part of poker and move on.

If you have a good bankroll system, you have what you are looking. Just use number of buyins as goals to go to higher limits.

I like what Orifice said. Aim for target hands/hours for each week and month.

If you're playing poorly and need to cut back on the hours of play to do more studying then that's fine, go in with that understanding. If you're winning I'd spend more time on playing than study.

Personally that was always how I rolled, if I was struggling I'd put more time in studying my hands and seeing if I was making bad plays or if it was variance related. If I'm winning I'm just gonna keep doing what I'm doing. I'm not a huge fan of studying in general though, I like to play.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I have started just watching my bb/100 and grinding 200-300 hands a night after work looking to get more volume in the weekends. I am really going to dig in and evaluate after 10000 hands..Not a great profit yet but by doing this I do not get frustrated by making small amounts on any given session (which usually makes me tilt when I'm not making as much as I think I should). Any other goals or states of mind that have helped you guys out feel free to let me know..again thanks

Just an update if anyone was wondering. I am running 17.73 bb/100 (0.88) for 2811 hands. Running pretty well and hoping I can maintain it through 10000 hands so I can reach my goal and move up.
Reasons why this has been working for me

When you measure it bb/100 even small victories can make you feel good. For instance if you have 200 hands and only a $2.50 profit. It still is is 125 bb/100

As someone mentioned earlier it helps you keep focused on the long term goal and not the short term goal. It also puts less stress on you to double up every session which is going to cause you to make wrong decisions.

It is a fun way to see how your running without a poker manager.

Just a quick note some of your math seems a bit off...

$1.25/100 hands and 100bb/100 would be a $0.01bb do those tables exist?

Anyway congrats, no reason you can't sustain that rate. I'm over 12bb/100 at 25nl for more than 10k hands and that's after a huge 4k hand downswing dropping 6BI's.

Keep doing what you are, and keep us updated
