I want to preface this by saying that I am not an amazing player. I know most people overrate their own abilities. I am a solid player who knows how to calculate odds, utilize position, know when to fold big hands and maximize value with made hands.

I've read a lot on this site about people watching pros play on TV and trying to emulate their moves in live games. I, like most watch watchers, have done this. I don't think it's a bad thing to think "what would Phil Ivey do here?"

But this leads me to my problem - playing $1/$2 live and excelling. In the past few weeks I've ventured to the casino quite a bit to see what kind of progress I can make at this level. However, I always leave frustrated for either two reasons: I forced to much action because playing for several hours and being up $100 isn't enough or because I lost to stupid players.

Now, I consider a stupid player one who will call with any pair or draw at any stage of the hand. These players also have the tendencies to bet out into pots at weird times, despite having horrible hands.

I guess most good players enjoy bad players but I'm not sure I do because their tendencies are so peculiar that I can't predict their action, which makes bluffing at them seem moronic. The logical move is to wait for a made hand and maximize but you don't always have time in a session for that.

So, I'm leaning toward moving up to $2/$5 to hopefully avoid the "beginners" or players with hardly any sense of the game. Also, this move will help my tendency to force action late in sessions to gain a larger profit since pots are much bigger at $2/$5.

Is there anyone who can speak to this transition? Who understands my point of view?

Any input would be great.

Thanks guys

I don't know what's happening to CC lately, and I don't mean you to take offense mate, but what is it with all these posts about preferring to play against better players? It just doesn't make any kind of sense to me.

I speak as someone who last night 3bet (rather large cos I knew he would call with almost anything) AA and was called with 92s. He flopped TP no draw, and shoved over my cbet. He binked a 2 on the turn. Did I leave that table? Did I f***!

$1-$2 live games are very swingy and full of terrible players. If you aren't crushing the local $1/$2 game with a bankroll of $10K+, you have no business moving up to $2/$5 games.

I'm unsure as to why you would to ignore the real beginner players. This doesn't make any sense. It's like saying you would rather play poker with pros as opposed to beginners.

As for live play...I've played live a few times and must admit, the players are bad in general but that is because the smallest limits are $1/$2.. I don't know how good players are at $2/$5 I can't see them being much different than your recreational $2 players.

He doesn't say you need it to play $1/$2, he says you'll need it to move up to $2/$5.
At this level 10k is only 20 full buy-ins so this is why you need to be crushing $1/$2 already or those 20 buy-ins are going to slip away pretty fast.

OP, as everyone else has said, embrace the donks (not literally). If you are a good player, you will beat them and that is where your profit will come from.

You also mention that 'playing for several hours and being up $100 isn't enough', but you also suggest that sometimes you lose because of this.
I know which I would prefer.

Read up on Bankroll Management until you are persuaded that winning is good, and dissuaded from playing above your roll

I know cafe, I don't get it either. I'd love to have a roll big enough to play live!

$1-2 (or £0.50-£1 if your English :D) is full of people who are practically giving money away..

Maybe we should make a thread addressing the issue and explaining in full for all the players who don't like fish?

Thanks for the immediate responses guy. I figured a bunch of you would question me on why I would rather play a "good" player vs a donk. I feel that playing against at least somewhat knowledgeable players feels more like poker than just straight gambling.

Sure, in the long run I will win out against donk players who call with anything at any stage, but those players also have the tendency to tilt me because of their stupid tendencies.

I still haven't found out if moving to $2/$5 is the right move. I heard a lot about bankroll but that is not a concern because I just want to give $2/$5 a try and if I lose a couple buy-ins then I am done. Basically, I would like some feedback on the level of player at $2/$5 in a live game.

Also, losing to a donk is particularly frustrating if they constantly play hands because then I am forced to wait until I have a good hand and play ABC to maximize. This isn't a problem but not how I like to play. I like to be unpredictable, mix it up and I know most players at $1/$2 don't notice other players moves, just play their own cards which is why I am considering the move to a higher level.

Again, thanks for the feedback. I am just looking for some constructive feedback, not people calling me an idiot for preferring to play players with at least some knowledge of the game.

At my regular place at Tampa Bay Downs, the 2/5 always has a ton more action than the 1/2 game. Just wish my bankroll was higher.

Get rid of that tilt.
