My name is Reid Young. I'm a professional poker player who plays 2/5-25/50 NLHE. I've written a book called An Advanced Guide to NLHE, and I'm a columnist with Cardplayer Magazine.

I'm fairly new to CardsChat, so I'd like to use this thread not only to introduce myself to everyone, but also to hit the ground running! So hello, and here we go!

Check out the poll on this thread and give a vote for the subject you'd like me to cover once we have enough votes for the poll. If you share the thread with a buddy, that helps us get to a statistically significant answer quicker and on our way.

(Note: There are loads of poker subjects that we can discuss. I've chosen 5 that seem interesting and different. If this goes well, then we can add more in the future, so comment if you have some more cool ideas for a poker subject you'd like to learn more about.)

It is interesting that you consider these subjects. To me it seems like most of these options can be explained in a paragraph unless you described every exact situation known to happen.

Selecting hands to play from the blinds, top 10% of your range and maybe a little more if your against a chronic stealer.

Choosing bluffing hands on the river, I am not 100% sure what you mean about this, explain? I would assume you mean busted draws that you got to the river with?

Pre flop opening distributions, you mean preflop opening range? Is there a difference?

Donk betting, interested to hear about this I suppose. I look at it as something to never do but maybe I need to add it to my game.

Starting a quick bankroll, get a job and deposit $200? Not sure how this is a subject, to make gaining a bank roll faster would mean to take more risk which would mean the potential of losing it faster? Kind of confused about this one.

Welcome to CC and maybe you can check out my cash thread in my sig and give me some input on some of my hands. Thanks!

jfc I should've known it was you lol. That post of yours in John's thread about calling down with 99 made me think "uh this guy sounds just like Reid".

Solid players join this forum every once in awhile but rarely stick around very long after they're done pushing whatever product/service they've come here to propagate. While you're here though I should mention that I've always appreciated your willingness to share your insight into holdem in a thoughtful, detailed, and (above all) friendly manner - be it through your posts, videos, or whatever else. I disagree with you on many an occasion but I greatly respect your contributions and the time/effort you put into furthering the progress of other players in the community. ty sir

Oh, it's going to get A LOT more involved. Trust me that the best players aren't explaining any single subject or dynamic in a paragraph, or anywhere close to it. What you'd likely find are multi-faceted conversations that could continue for days on end.

Selecting hands to play from the blinds, top 10% of your range and maybe a little more if your against a chronic stealer.

You may want to vote for that option :p There's quite a bit more that goes into playing from the blinds. What position is the opener? How many callers have come before him? Has anyone re-raised? What are effective stack sizes? On and on...

Choosing bluffing hands on the river, I am not 100% sure what you mean about this, explain? I would assume you mean busted draws that you got to the river with?

You bet flop turn and pause to consider what to bet on the river from the cutoff facing a button caller pre-flop on a 3:diamond:4:heart:T:spade:J:spade:K:spade: board run out. How often does your opponent have to call? What hands of yours are clear value bets? What is the best bet size for your bluff? On and on...

Pre flop opening distributions, you mean preflop opening range? Is there a difference?

That's what I meant. Distribution = range. It's just a more common term in maths.

Donk betting, interested to hear about this I suppose. I look at it as something to never do but maybe I need to add it to my game.

Yes. Never leading is a mistake unless your opponents blindly continuation all boards that hit your range much harder than their own open-raising range, in which case you already have stumbled upon a nice default exploitive strategy. Still, learning how to face off against better players for when you plan to move up is a good idea!

Optimizing bankroll growth. Juggling risk and reward. Exploiting bonuses. And more!

Thanks! See you there, and let me know what you end up deciding on for your vote.

Sounds all around awesome. I plan on sticking around through the thick and thin of whatever is to come, just like on TwoPlusTwo. I'm not sure how prolific I'll be on CardsChat also, but the warm welcome helps! Thanks, guys.

I'm glad that we disagree sometimes. That means we're going to talk subjects out and improve and that's the name of the game.
