All this talk about AKs has got me thinking about preflop value and fold equity.

Is there any situation where your play would be to fold AA preflop? I can't think of any.

If I were last to act and there were say 5 people all in on the hand I doubt I would fold but I am sure to get out drawn by one of those players.

Of course that only happens in micro and freerolls so we arent really talking poker at that stage of the game anyway. Are we?

That's what I'm thinking - get all your chips in with the best hand. Of course after the flop there are tons of scenarios you'd want to fold. Just curious if anyone can think of a situation where it would be a solid play to fold AA preflop.

Only one time I can think of folding AA preflop is considered a good play.

If its really close to a satellite bubble with a lot of short stacks and I have a big enough stack (above average) to fold into the payout, I'll fold AA preflop. The reason being is since satellites usually pay the same value tickets per winner, I dont need to play the hand if I can fold into a win. A double with AA will not give me more value for my hand and I risk the chance of being knocked out.

There is one situation I may fold AA preflop

If I am at the final table and mid stacked. and 3-4 peeps are all in before me. I may not want to get out flopped when there is a good chance that 2 or 3 peeps might drop and move me up in the money a spot or 2.

I think it was on poker after dark that the host ( I forget her name) asked Phil Helmuth if there was ever a situation in which he would fold AA preflop and his response was a resounding "No"

Folding AA preflop is just crazy, even if your facing an all in raise because your going to be a 4 to 1 favorite heads up: how else are you going to get preflop odds like that?

Now post flop, there definitely are occassions where you can fold AA... If you have AsAd, and the flop comes 3c4c5c, then you may want to fold, depending how many people are in the hand and what sort of raise your facing, because if any club comes on the turn or the river your gonna lose the hand, and someone may already have caught a flush.

The biggest problem with a hand like AK or AA is that people get very attached to hands like that and get to a point where they simply are unable to lay the hand down no matter the flop comes, or how strong their opponents seem to be playing the hand...

So fold AA preflop, No, Post flop Maybe, but one thing thats important is that you raise preflop so that you knock out the 2c7c for if the flop comes 3c4c5c.

Very good point. But I need to say if its me at that table Im thinking come and get me Im all in with a good chance at being the chip leader when its all said and done.

Thats just me.

The hand that you have depend only one criteria....

Position, position and position.

Because AA x 22 for me is 51% versus 49% pré-flop.....

doug with AA versus 22 your close a 4 to 1 favorite everytime preflop.depending upon the suits of the dueces versus the suits of the aces.

Pretty interesting question....I think the ONLY time would be if like 4 people were all in preflop and I was shortstacked on a huge buyin final table that would move me up like thousands of dollars..but that's it lol

As others have said if your on the bubble of a fairly large tourny then yes maybe, but I dont think I would go around telling people that. I was on the bubble of a tourny with less than 10 to the money was short stacked at my table got dealt rockets and busted out.Oh well I wouldn't play it any differently.

preflop A A???? mm..

if it were a freeroll everyone calls and ur bound to be defeated but hey its a freeroll. so what!!!!
now if it were a money tournament not everyone will call, and even if u get three or four people calling high pre flop bets then they obviously have another ace with a kicker or a pocket pair and regardless you have to be mighty unlucky to lose the pot once committed. and if by any way you do lose with A A then you just got to admit defeat and realise its not your day and take the day off, ha.:p

On full tilt there are 18 man toureys where the first 5 get a $26 token 6th gets $14 cash.

on Sunday I was sitting in the BB in 7th position of 7 remaining , UTG went all in, UTG +1 (6th in Chips) called ,Button (3rd stack) came over the top and SB (Big Chip Leader ) called, chip leader had 55 and hit trips on turn to win the hand.

I folded my KK not because I was afraid of AA but because he odds seemed right that atleast 1 player would go out that hand, folding AA would have been just as easy

Yea I think its dumb to fold AA preflop, unless, as stated earlier, you're at the final table and the potential prize is huge, and youre late position and you have at least 3 people going over the top before you... even then i'd say it'd be tough

how can you fold the best hand in poekr pre flop... i cant think of a case where you play against good players where 5 people go all in before you... that only happens in the firsthand of some freerolls where theres so many players.. but otherwise... thats just a stupid scenario... even so.. you should probably make the call

There isn't any istuation I can think of. You have the best hand. Why fold? Postflop is a different story.

Perhaps on the bubble but probably not. After all you have to have the best hand preflop and the odds are with you to win at showdown. Granted you won't always win but thats why they cll it gambling. Stack sizes might come in to play though I could see it happen both short and deep stacked. If you're short stacked its an opportunity to increase your stack if you already have a big stack your still going to be in it afterwards no matter hat happens.
