In essence, what do you guys do ?

Do you finance yourselves into tournaments via cash-games proceeds or do you satellite yourself into them ?

On a secondary note,

I've started realizing that satellites to tournaments are always dealt with a huge amount of variance given the inherent different nature of them compared to cash-games.

Strictly mathematically playing a cash game with EV+ game then you'll end up a winner in the long term.

Tournaments change that drastically due to the inherent antes and levels building up, depending on how much time is given each level.

Surely, an EV+ game and all-ins on the correct cards will assure a higher win rate of pots, however, if your unlucky with variance, your entire chip stack is gone and your out of the tournament..

So one must both balance aggression and ALL-ins, yet simultaneously be cautious whilst playing tournaments, but I just can't find an alternative explanation beside the one I am arriving at - which is that tournaments seem to be much more about luck or a different skillset, which is more akin to psychology ?

Surely, it differs depending if it's an online tournament or live tournament, and I wonder if anyone could elaborate on the topic further and ponder these questions with me as I am going into the poker world and trying to connect with others who share the same interest & passion as I do.

Cheers, and this seems like a really pleasant and awesome community.

I tend to avoid satellites, those games turn into bingo real fast, if you have the cash buy in with it, it will save you a lot of headaches.

That is what I've noticed, I assume that the pros such as Phil Ivey, Phil Hellmuth, they all just buy in themselves at the later stages and don't satellite themselves in ?

So I ought to stick with increasing my bankroll and gradually finance to go higher up in buy ins for tournaments that I am interested in, is that how you do ?

I always manage to do really well at satellites, then manage to fail in the real tournament.

I think as long as you can win a satellite ticket for less than the buy-in then mission accomplished

Absolutely, increase you BR until you are properly rolled for the stakes you want to play.

The problem is that you dont always win the first satellite you play, if you have to keep entering satellites for an specific tournament it may cost you more than the normal buy in.
