Greetings,

I am very new to Omaha and found a regular game near me playing $1/2 NL Omaha Hi/Holdem' round by round switching games every revolution. The game is $1/2 but plays more like $2/$5 or $3/$6. I have a good holdem' game but im new to omaha and am enjoying the action it brings.

Many of the guys I play with are very loose, playing almost every hand regardless of a preflop raise or position. Standard preflop raises are anywhere between $5 and $25. Also Straddles and restraddles are frequest with straddlers often popping it more before the flop.

The game consists of many LAG type players and calling stations. A couple NITS and some ABC players. I would put money that many players are making many mistakes.

Im hoping I can get some advice on how to exploit a $1/2 game that plays more like $2/5 with a couple maniacs and mostly everyone playing way too many hands. I feel like flush/straight draws are all treated equally regardless if they're drawing to the nuts or not.

My preflop game in omaha is non-existant. In holdem' I play very TAG. In omaha, I play too cautious because Im not exactly sure of a good preflop hand. I almost never raise preflop and am very cautious betting my hands as it seems people call no matter what. Its almost comparible to a play chips table on facebook.

I'm beginning to get a grip on what makes a good omaha hand and am just curious how you guys would approach a game described as I have above. I feel like its just a gold mine waiting to be exploited, but I don't understand omaha enough to do it. Thus I come to you.

NL Omaha sounds crazy!
You wanna be playing connected hands and suited hands. I avoid playing too aggressive pre flop as people usually call with anything. A lot of rookies make the mistake of overplaying AAxx pre flop. Also very easy to put them on that hand when they 3 r 4bet.

It does indeed get very crazy. I lost a good $350 on the following hand last week(Forgive my inexperience of sharing hands and rusty memory):

Hero is dealt:6s 6c 8c 9c

5 people to the Flop: 6h4h7d Pot: ~$60

Villian bets $35
I call, another calls.
Pot: ~$165

3 people to the turn: 5d
Villian goes all in for ~$150
I went all in for ~$320
Another caller

3 people to the river no more betting as 2 are all in
River: 2d

When the money went in on the turn, all 3 players had the 89 for the nuts. I had the full house draw, another player had the diamond flush draw and the other player had the heart flush draw.

Villian wins with Heart flush

Even though we all had the nuts with good draws on the turn, I feel as if I had the advantage as some of their outs should had been counterfited/blocked by my full house draw. I tried to plug this into a omaha calculator and it seems we all had about the same chance to win. Its hard because I cant exactly remember the other players hole cards, I just know they both had 89 and flush draws.

I hate variance so maybe omaha is not for me.

You either got the river card wrong or the hand winner wrong, because as posted the winning hand must be a diamond flush.

And if you don't like variance then Omaha is not for you. It's a huge drawing/re-drawing game with high variance.

I did get it wrong. The Diamond draw won the hand. This site will not let me edit the post. I tried in 2 different browsers.

I like Omaha but fear its going to drain my bankroll. Unfortunately if I want to play at any of the games around my area I have to get used to it otherwise drive 2 hours to the casino or play in $35 3 table tournaments that are boring. I will say it omaha makes holdem' feel like a very boring game. They call it texas foldem' where I play.

Seems like you'd just want to nut peddle at a game that loose and aggro. Don't see anything wrong with the posted hand either, as that's the sort of thing you're trying to do. Perhaps there's an argument for raising the flop with middle set.

Anyway, preflop you're looking to play hands that can make the nuts for the most part. Something with two small pair or one small & one middle pair is not really where you want to be (like 3344 or 2288). Low run hands are also potentially dangerous, as you get into second-nut situations more often (like 3456ds). If the game is super loose and aggro I'm not sure you need to be too aggressive preflop as you're unlikely to get it HU or have that large an equity advantage. Though, if it's NL omaha you might consider just shipping AAxx pre...especially if there's already been a raise and a few calls.

I think you only have a half hour to edit your posts here.

And Omaha does provide a lot more action than hold'em --- which is part of what drives the additional variance.
