Obviously Doyle Brunson is a poker legend but I was just wondering how everyone feels he matches up in NLHE cash games against the best in the world these days i.e. the likes of Phil Ivey, Tom Dwan etc. Is he on there level or do you think they have an edge on him?

Doyle played in the high stakes games with these guys all the time, so he must have done good enough to be keep playing them...I think he's just as capable of outplaying them as they are with him...but maybe he doesn't get involved with hands as much as the others...but when he does, he can hold is own....maybe I'm wrong I dont know, just going with what I've seen watching the games.

If I was a player at Doyle's age, picking better spots (Easy Games) would be games of choice.

First off, Doyle is one of my favorite players, but just like any other profession, new people will always come along that can out perform you. But Doyle's a master at his craft while most modern pros are just journeymen. Doyle doesn't have anything to prove anymore. You have to be excited and motivated to win at poker and Doyle could live very comfortable for the rest of his days without playing one more hand of poker. Plus a lot of pros got to were they are today by reading Doyle's book among others. A good example would be the wise carpenter who teaches a young man how to build. While the young man doesn't know anything yet the carpenter can give him the knowledge to become a faster an more effective builder. Therefore, the master can teach the apprentice to become greater than himself. Plus to be honest, Doyle is just getting older, and with naturally declining health I'm sure it's harder for him to perform 100% all the time. Just think about trying to grind people while your body is probably achy, and you need a wheel chair to comfortably get around. Don't get me wrong, I'm not talking down on him, just trying to put you in his eyes.

Doyle is still a fantastic player. Obviousely High Stakes Poker was dramatized for TV, but he was a very consistant winner against other top pros there. He has also been thriving in the toughest games for decades. Poker does not change. People like to imagine that it does, but they are wrong. As Doyle said in Super System "Poker is a game of people, played with cards." (paraphrasing that quote as I am not holding the book right now)

I think Doyle can hold his own against any player today. His age makes no difference. I wouldn't want to play against him. He knows as much if not more then any of the young pros today imo.

Doyle is one of the all time greats and can hold his own against anyone. But....the young guns like Tom Dwan and Victor Blom are really unpredictable and hard to play against. So are the more mature players like Phil Ivey Patrick Antonius and several others... They've seen so many hands online that they have amassed a lifetime of experience in a relatively short time span. But Doyle has amassed a lifetime of experience in a lifetime! So all and all, it's probably a wash.

doyle is a true ambassador to the game, the journey he has been on is amazing,
I'm so glad he has won wsop bracelets he had to make a living the hard way,
and could only play one game at a time remember which is quite remarkable.

Any wisdom you need doyle is your man his mindset and strategy can work against superior opponants,
even though I would say the top online founded players are now ahead of doyles time, he has managed to hold is own and isn't stupid enough to give them a chance to exploit him,
he obviously now wont be able to play long days given his health, but no doubt he still talks a great game
