Yo,

What up fellas? Ok I just finished up a 4 hour hu session with a guy who took lots of my money. I don't like to quit anyone when I play. It really bothers me when someone gets up on me. I don't play poorly and the tilt really doesn't effect my play much. Its just that it eats away at me when a bad player owns me. Usually I just grind it out and the variance takes care of itself. But this time it just kept getting worse & worse. I finally quit him after he spiked a duece on the river and my 9's were sent to the muck. This guy straight up ran me over & I couldn't force myself to quit. Overpair vs tptk. 2 pair vs sets. Full houses over flushes. It was just sickening how many times he got the best of me. Im crushing his all ins pre and losing post flop. How can you quit a guy when you have the best of it when the money goes in and he just keeps sucking out? If your playing well and making positive ev plays and have an edge on him, do you even want to quit? How long should you wait? Man poker can be cruel. I didn't tilt that much but after 4 hours of bad beats & suckouts I finally gave up, I just couldn't take it anymore.

Anyways, hopefully i didn't whine too much in my post. I'm taking a break for the next couple hours and then its back to ginding.

Thanks for all the advice.

Peace

Things like that happen all the time in the game of poker. Just because you have a better hand preflop doesn't mean it's going to or should win. You were playing heads up so more hands are getting played. Even some that normally wouldn't get played. Oh, I'm rambling. Running bad is a chance you take in poker.

thanks for the reply queenie. I've only been playing hu for a couple months now & am still adjusting to the higher variance. So far tho, that session has been by far the most messed up 4 hours of poker in my playing time. It was like no matter how I played I had no chance to win. I'm not sure if I should have played for as long as I did. Anyways, I try not to let short term variance have any effect on my poker playing & I'm gonna start up a fresh new session right now & hope to run good.

Johni,

believe it or not, I am willing to bet you are tilting a lot more than you realize. Your post just reeks with emotion, and that means tilt.

Tilt is not just punching your 1000$ 30" monitor after a bad beat. Any play you make that is a result of any outside influence as opposed to simple optimal play, i.e. "he is a donk, and he has sucked my money, I will play and show him, his luck cant run forever" is a form of tilt.

You say playing a couple of months, HU is one of the hardest formats to master. Your opponent may have been playing btter than you think (Maybe not, just sayin)

Post some hands in the HH HA section.

GL.

It's impossible to play a long HU session without being drawn out on a lot. That's simply the nature of the beast. Because you have to play a lot of hands, both of you have a lot of opportunities to come from behind. And the more opportunities, the more it happens, even if the cards follow the math.

It's tempting to blame luck when you lose. But that doesn't make it so. And even if you did lose because the opponent ran hot, it still leaves the possibility that you lost more than you should have because you didn't play optimally.

As for when to quit, the simplest thing may be to set yourself a stop-loss; i.e. quit if your losses reach a predetermined number of buyins.

This is the nature of HU. Sucks even worse when you think one more game and I'll go to bed, lose and think I'll play till I win and drop like 10BI before going to bed.

Set a limit for yourself before you even start the session. Know how much you are willing to lose before you start. Also at what point will you stop when you are winning. Self Control.

j blayze i feel your pain seems like when you run up on someone like that youve got to find a way to walk away i know from my hard headed i cant keep losing to this fish experiences is so damn hard but your bankroll is more important than your poker ego that being said it took me years to learn when a donk is sucking out on you repeatedly nothing is gonna change it your wired kings will lose to a naked ace on the river no matter what keep your head up bro you will grind it back!!

When you say you were "crushing" his all in preflops... what exactly do you mean? AK vs 78 or what? It is interesting how the numbers run and how when you may have read a little thinking you were totally in the green and over the course of thousands of PF you will be, but small sample is small potatoes.

Hey guys,

Thanks for all the replies & advice.

I prolly was tilting a little when I wrote this, but while I was playing I tried to keep my cool as best I could. When I said crushing his all ins pre it was with hands like ak vs kj or 99 vs 22. He just kept winning with dominated hands. He would boat up when I would flush. I would 2 pair when he hit sets. It was unreal. I kept my cool & just kept getting it in good. It was kinda driving me insane tho.

I have a hand history I will try to post in a min.

I quit when I am broke or when he leaves.

hence why sometimes I lose huge sums of money to fish.
