Do you often use cash outs in cash games?

Yesterday I played and greed played a trick on me. I successfully made all-in a few times and increased my stack. However, opponents in front of the turn or on the turn still had 2-10% to win in such cases. I think that I was not mistaken when I took my 70-90% of the bank early. But at the same time, the card on river made my combination 100% strong.

This happened 7 times and I thought that hell, I do not get all the money from this. If I summed up the money that I was not get, it would amount to a few dollars. One dude wrote in chat that I was doing stupid things and giving easy money to pokerstars. Well, at this time new players come to the table and two of them play very well. They successfully slowplayed against me, and one of them took a good bank several times after confronting me.

There came a time when I had a more nut hand, I made all-in. 92% to win! At that moment, I thought that I would not do a cash out and would receive all the money (oh, it was great mistake). This moment was the last for me yesterday, because the river made the opponent’s hand stronger :fight:

I came to the conclusion that in the future I will do cash out at any limits with 55%+ to win. As we say in Russia, a titmouse in a hand is better than a crane in the sky (I hope you understand). I also recalled a parable about a little boy, a hairdresser and 25 cents (against the dollar) :D

And you? What you think about cash out? Are you often use this option?

If the hand is played for a lot of money then I will consider the chance to do a cash out. Playing at low stakes where there is not so much value in the pot, I quite assume that I would do cash out, rather then that I will gamble and see the 5 card at the board.
Not always maybe when I'm in a quite bad position with only lets say 2-3 outs, then is good to use that option, because you will save something, rather then loosing all.

Yes, I really appreciate this feature, because it makes it possible to consistently earn for tight-aggressive players.

I used to, and I got burned by the cards flipping in my favour on the river too many times.

The pros always say dont use it.

And to be honest.. If you really are basically beat with about 3% equity, Your cash out is worth hardly anything and you may as well let it run to see if an absolute miracle happens. (in my opinion)

Hello! I have a similar situation, as soon as I disagree on the deal, the river defeats me, I just lost on two AQ pairs, the river brought the villain to the street. Respectfully, Sergey.

Haven't run the exact numbers, but if we're looking at the long run, we're giving up a percentage of our expected winnings to the house. From a purely numbers point of view, we're just adding to the rake and not maximizing our profits.

That said, we should consider what affect bad beats have on our game. If we're 90% favored to win and lose, how much do we expect to lose from our emotional reaction? Will we go on tilt and start spewing like crazy? If so, we might actually be hedging against future losses and ensuring we can continue playing optimally by cashing out. Of course, we have to balance that against the feeling that we could have won an extra 10% of the pot had we resumed the hand - but again, if we're going to manage our emotions, we should probably work towards avoiding tilt.

Ed Miller's Small stakes book might be somewhat out of date, but it makes an important point in the beginning - poker is gambling. We have to accept that fact in order to be profitable in the long run (by playing against bad players) and to manage our emotional reactions to bad beats, so if cashing out helps us to manage tilt and make us more profitable, we should do so. But we should be working towards letting it run every time.

I do it all the time now unless I'm very short stacked. I've been stung too many times with miracle rivers when I'm in for 98%. The times I have cashed out recently have been great decisions.

Yes I give up some money but that's better than losing my money to a lucky suck out. People criticise my actions at the table and I couldn't care less. Do what works for you.

I’ve used it several times I actually like it takes the frustration out of losing to weaker hands.

Me i use it especially preflop, last time i was holding AK after opening x3 there was one caller behind and the BB squeezes jam, i was ready to gamble if he had QQ or JJ but he turned AQ so i made the cash out, when they ran the hand there was a Q on the flop and i would be loosing the hand. I think we should use it from time to time to diminish the swings.

Cashing out regularly in a cash game is often frowned upon by other players, but I read in some Poker book that in order to win money from cash games, it is the best way to accumulate money, you set yourself a limit to win, cash out when you hit it and sit down for another session.
In a Live Cash game this is not allowed, and many places would make you buy-in for what you cashed out for, so the other players have a chance to win their money back.
On-line there is the opportunity to buy in for the Maximum limit and cash out when you win and then Bank the winnings and start from the Maximum again, there is nothing in the rules to stop players doing this on-line although you might make a few enemies, if you do.
This is why I hate playing Cash games on-line because players will do it, and it leads to players being overly aggressive.
But saying that, if you bought into a 1c 2c cash game the maximum buy-in is $2.00, there is nothing stopping you from making a double up and then cash out, and find another table, there are usually a lot to choose from, I just don't feel like playing that way as there really is no fun in it.

When the fun Stops, STOP!

of course you can never be sure sometimes you use it and in the end you are the winner and you get less money because you used this option. I personally have used it maybe 2 or 3 times. But I only have 2 reasons to go into a cash game allin either I am convinced that I have the winning hand or I have too few chips left to do anything else. The possibility to be paid off only makes sense if you can really assess how the hand is going to end. Sometimes it is only up to the river that decides whether you win or lose. I have often seen people use this option but haven't seen people get angry about it. Why should they? Nothing is taken away from them if one of them does it? I only rarely use it so I can't really say whether it is recommended or not but I can imagine that it can be a good option to prevent people from losing more than they should. But basically you should always be careful with cash games

I think it depends on some kind of hands but I had a day where I should have done it more than enough and unfortunately, I was « greedy » to get the maximum out of it and rivers killed me and my bank roll. So now I’m more careful and cash out more often as I prefer receiving a 75-80% than 0%!

No real comment on the cash out deal - I have only played that type of game once, on Pokerstars I guess?

It just confused me, and I haven't ever considered it again since I don't play those games there.

but I enjoyed the humorous, accented - Russian perhaps? - twist to the post.
Cheers !

cash out usually are losing money in a long run. But there could be the situations when it's actually ev0 or +ev. Example:

BU opens first in with AKo, SB 3bets with QQ, BU 4bets, SB allin, BU calls. It's a situation when QQ has 56%, AK 44%. Of course QQ is a favourite, but if BU opens first in with AK then it means that players from EP-CO didn't have many or have none at all Ax, Kx in their hand, because we open many Ax, Kx from those positions. That means statistically there are more Ax, Kx left in a deck so with QQ we have less than 56% and taking cash out can be actually a good option. There are some other spots when potential card removal effect can have influence on making cash out at least ev0 spot.

But the real winner on this option is a pokerroom. Not you.

OP is referring to the 'cash out' feature on Pokerstars... much different than what you are referring to here. (look it up.. it's an interesting feature/option they added)

When you need to take a short break after playing for many hours, I use cash out. For example, I don’t want to leave profitable tables, but there is no break as in a cash tournament.
