This is my situation:
I know starting with a small bankroll is not the best decision but I hope some of you guys can let me know some tips for starting out with a low bankroll. I play on sportsbook so the smallest cash games are 0.02/0.04BB. Anyways so yeah, I have 20 $ I don't know what I should play. Should I just open few cash games screens or do SNG's? Like, idk what to do. Anyways thanks for anything.
P.S. if your familiar with the tourneys at sportsbook; would help if you told me the exact things to play at!

Are you totally new to the game of poker??? ... How i started playing was going to local pub tourneys/home games and having a set limit of money to burn each week to gain experience.

I think 20$ might be a bit short of what you need to get started.. perhaps you'll get lucky, remember 25 buy-ins is to be safe from variance.

A lot of ppl play freerolls to win small... Or win a small tourney spend a lil to win quite a bit.

smallest cash tables (4nl ?) &/or cheapest SNG's.

If I were you, I'd probably try to focus on one or the other & pretty sure it'd be 4nl.
good luck. hope you run good.

If you can move to a site that has 2nl imo, at least you'll have 10 buyins then

HU SNGs. If you're on Merge, they got $2 turbos you could start at.

I always recommend minstacking. Less risk of bust on a bad beat.

I personally prefer buying in for somewhere around the high side of middle, so if max buy in is $4 I would buy in for $2.5, this gives you enough to work with, but will keep you from losing a as much when you get a bad beat. Although I really don't think what you buy in with matters nearly as much as the quality of your play

Basically you don't have the luxury of doing the optimal full buy-in (unless you are going to use very aggressive bankroll management).

Either deposit for a bit more (ideally about $100 for 4nl), or buy-in short. If you're new to poker, consider playing some for free.

Well different buy-ins (shortstack, midstack, deepstack) require different styles of play, and ultimately you wanna play to what you feel most comfortable with. Personally I have a pretty compulsive tendency to play laggy that I have a hard time reining in, so I end up having to let go of marginal hands on later streets when it seems I'm beat (or worse, busting on them). If I play deepstacked, I end up losing a lot of money to that, and tilting out. Minstacking (or playing cap games) means I can be more confident about playing marginal +EV hands, which increases my aggressiveness and the quality of my play, because I know mathematically I can risk busting multiple times as I can then make it all back winning monster multiway pots.

if you're doing well in the $1 sngs to start with you should stick with them for a little while...then probably try to move to $2-4 hu sngs and some cash games after you have 30+ buy ins or so

I like the 9man SnGs myself, you're doing well at 6man- stick w them
maybe throw a few cash tbls in occassionally
Id say not full buyin and not the smallest either- in the middle

It seems you've found your groove within a specific area already. I understand it's always fun to branch out and try other areas such as cash tables and MTT's, but you need a bigger bank roll before that should happen.

I'd say continue with your $1 SnG's until you have enough to branch out elsewhere. Poker requires a lot of discipline, and that can also be said about the bankroll used with it.

^^ This! Totally this. TheKid84 just hit the spot. If you are already doing well and getting more experience at $1 6max SnG, then keep doing it, keep getting better and keep upping your bankroll.
With $28 you're already bankrolled with at least 25 buy-ins for those $1 SnG. Move it up to $50 and try the $2 SnG, and on and on.

For example, a few weeks ago I decided to spend around $15 at different types of SnG's (6max,9man,HU,180man,turbs,regulars), tourneys (6max,9man,turbos,regulars,deepstack) and cash to see what's the one I enjoy more and have +EV. For now I'm still spending :D

But what I noticed is, if you wanna try different games, you're gonna lose money very fast with a small bankroll, unless you're good at them all.
And also noticed that for each type, it's own type of game play. So pick one where you win and enjoy it's style of play ;)

Definitely try SnG tournaments. $1 sng is a good choice and just keep increasing while tour bankroll is increasing. Perhaps once you hit $50 then go the next increment of SnG tournament. I prefer 9 player SnG in this case though because 6 player ones is just too low of a starting chips unless you are comfortable with that.

Definitely do what works best for you.
Also what is a "cap" game?
Thanks

Stick with the sng's and get enough of a bankroll to move up to bigger stakes.

how about starting from 0.11 six handed SNG?

20 bucks equals to about 200 or so buyins, pretty safe for u to grind and build the bankroll up!

I have built nice bankrolls from $50 and then went on to lose them.. so make sure you set yourself some limits and know them, stopping while your ahead is always a good choice. Your account will always be there tomorrow no need to keep entering tournys and cash games to try and make your money back or make more which ever the case may be. Start out slow dont be in a rush.

Doing some studying and reading up on poker scenarios and strategies always helps.

Good luck to you sir!

Play whatever you're better at. Either the $1 sngs or 4nl. In 4nl, the amount would be based on how the other players at the table have. If theres a lot of players under $2, then just min buyin or up to $2. I would also play $2 double up sngs. I dont know if there are $1 double ups but playing those can really help you boost your bankroll.
