Do you think that training with virtual money can make you better in cash games?

I think NO. Why? Who play virtual money? And who play real money?

Think about it... good players spend time to play virtual money? I dont think so.

When you loose 100$ in virtual money poker. What you feel? ok than when you loose 100$ in real money poker. Is it the same?

When you play in virtual money poker it is only for fun no for training.

When you play virtual poker money, this is just for fun, not for training.
That's I agree with you but I think it's a good option for beginners.

There is nothing wrong with virtual money if you play poker for fun, but if you want to progress with the real money do not use virtual one.
If you think about the beginners they could probably play some games with real money and some with play money, but not for too long.

I believe that effective training is possible only if the game is going to be for real money. In my opinion, virtual money is more like non-alcoholic beer and does not bring any benefits. :D

I see no value in virtual money cash games. Even for a beginner.

If you are looking to learn the game of holdem, play some freeroll tourneys until you get the basic understanding of the game. Then if you want move to cash games you can play the lower limits to understand how they differ from tournaments.

nope. It's always a bad idea. There is no money to win, there is no money to lose so you actually don't play a poker. You can only learn the bad habits. It won't help you. It can make your game only worse.

+1 to this comment

The only thing it could be good for is learning to remember stack sizes. So many other ways to do that tho.

Definitely not.
Playing with real money puts you to the test. You face situations that are resolved through analysis, study and time. That in virtual money it is not possible to solve them correctly.
And this is true because in fictional money, there is no adrenaline and pressure of cash games with real money.
As a consequence, incorrect calls, unbalanced bets, conceptual errors, etc. are observed.
If you want to improve your game, do not try to play with virtual money.
I recommend you practice in real tournaments with cheap tickets. (Example buy in $ 0.02)
An intermediate alternative between real and virtual games are freeroll tournaments. This is a good option to practice.
Greetings.

To be honest it is also very limited, how much "pressure" there is in a 2NL cash game, where people can typically buy in for as little as 80c. I mean: Do people really care about losing 80c or 2$? Typically not or at least the recreational players dont.

That being said I still agree, that 2NL is a better training ground than play money tables. The main reason is, that even at 2NL you will find serious "regulars", who are trying to use correct strategy and build a bankroll, and this is just not the case at play money tables.

Absolutely no. Even open freerolls are bad tournaments for training (if we talk about no-deposit training). But cardschat freerolls are high quality tournaments! So if you want fun - play with virtual money but for training - your choice is freeroll club! :)

I have actually played a lot of play money poker, because I had family responsibility and did not want to risk losing money. It was partly a ideological thing, that I did not want to "gamble". However after starting playing at pokerstars, I really felt, I had wasted a ton of time.

The software was just so much better, and so was game quality, since play money had a lot of crazy short stackers, while at PokerStars at least you can not buy in for less than 40BB, and most players buy in for more. Maybe its ok to practice with play money for a week or two, but I certainly dont recommend spending a significant amount of time on it.

I did play a lot of playmoney games and sometimes still do.
But the initial question was will playing with virtual money help to play cash games.
And the answer is no. The games are similar , but there is a different strategy to play with virtual money than to play with real money.
In a similar way there is a difference between Holdem and Omaha.
I play both but experience from plaiyng the one does not help me to play the other one.

Due to the fact that virtual money can be played anyhow. And so they play there mostly. That tactic of the game does not suit you at all for the cache. Playing for virtual money makes it possible to remember the young players of the poker combination well.

Player pool tendencies are different, but to be fair you can learn some basic things at play money tables, like hand ranking and reading board textures. So that on the real money tables you dont make rookie mistakes like missing the fact, there is a 1-liner to a straight, or calling a river bet with a counterfeited hand. And a simple TAG style will work well both at play money and 2NL, so there are SOME similarities.

not really because your opponents play differently with fictitious money. they are not afraid to lose and call almost everything. the best way to improve your game is to watch strategic videos and get inspired when you play.

On Pokerstars the players who play at very high stakes play money are very good. They take the game seriously, the lowest stakes where most people play are just having fun, just enjoy watching numerous bad beats and fold. I still play with the play money side, practicing/simulating league games is fun there
