In cash games, when the pot is usually 8-10BB's after the flop and maybe some feeler bets out there, how much are you willing to call when you did not make your set? For example you have 44 and the board is 27A rainbow. No straight or flush possibilities. How much are you willing to invest against generally deep stacks to try and make your set on the turn?

I wouldnt invest anything to try and make my set. However, I would sometimes call (and try to take down the pot with a bet on the turn) or semibluff raise the flop.

Yeah, I don't think I'd be investing anything to make my set. How much/if I was to call at all would depend on the action before the flop, and whether I put the opponent on an ace, or whether I put them on something that they could be pushed off of, like a similar hand to ours (small pair). If I was to call, it would only really be to take the pot down on the turn..

I agree, I will try to semibluff with a smaller pair 22-JJ, to control the pot and try to take it down. If I don't hit on the turn, I will slow down and try to stay in the hand with a small bet or make up my mind what amount I will call on the river if I miss. Calling a small bet on the river, even if you are beat can give good info for later on the players. X

If your are just chasing your set you have about an 8% chance of hitting your 2 outs after missing the flop so I dont think it would be wise to invest any more than this unless you are sure you could get the villian to stack off when you hit it.

Depends on position. If in late position, maybe a 2bb bet will scare off others (providing there is a big card on the board so they think you paired) Otherwise, you will likely get called by someone that has big cards in their hand. In early position, your bluff is risky, as someone behind you may have actually hit and now can slow play you

If you don't hit your set on the flop, give up on hitting a set. You need 25:1 pot odds to chase (12.5:1 if you can see turn/river without there being another bet on the turn), if your opponent bets that small then it's a big sign of weakness and it's probably best to just raise.

Seems like a losing hand from the beginning

Agree with most of these posts. It really stinks to have a small pocket pair that costs you a ton of chips. Steal the blinds, or take a shot after the flop. After that punt, unless your real adventurous.
