Ive read a few poker books, but i often find that unless i deliberately practice a technique, it goes in one ear and out the other. So i have come up with a great idea of taking one new technique that your not overly comftable with playing and practicising it in different tournaments( in the right situation of course) until you feel comftable with it and you can classify it as being in your armorie.

What do you guys think?

I know what you're talking about, but it is a little hard to come up with the situation if it has already gone in one ear and out the other. Here is a better idea...

When you sit down to read your poker book, take notes on it. It helps tremendously. Sure, you might feel silly taking notes at first while your reading a book about cards, but it makes sense. Think about back when you were in school... you would read a book and take notes on the side, or have some sort of a printout, or highlighted things for going over later. Same thing here, you are trying to absorb the information, not just skim over it. And most people when they read, they will remember parts, but not the whole. You will probably remember the name of the concept or play, but will you remember what situations work for it? Or even how to implement it? I used to never take notes with poker books, and I must have read Harrington's books 3 times before I remembered all of the concepts(by the way, the 3rd time I took notes). Because I would forget about them a chapter afterward. Try it and see how much you improve!

I use a "crib sheet" - a sheet of notes in a plastic sleeve that sits beside my keyboard. On it, I have recorded leaks that I want to fix and key points I want to remember. I look over it from time to time when not playing in a hand. Helps to alleviate boredom and to help me improve my game, both at the same time.

That's a good idea Egon. I remember back in college I had something like that that I tacked onto a bulletin board behind my computer screen. I would have a bunch of stuff back there, from different plays to remember, to some percentages and formulas to help remember.

The gold Slip file by my side.

Interesting topic. I take notes like absoluthamm mentions and print them out into a slip file. The most important concepts that relate to the entire game I will have on the first sheet and will read that sheet before I even start to play a game. For example one point on my first sheet is the point that Sklansky mentions in his theory of poker: the bets you save are as important as the bets you win. That for me is priceless and must be read before I sit down to play-repetition is the key to learning.

Also-having studied education (I was going to be a teacher),writing/typing down notes activates the kinesthetic areas of your brain and puts associations in the cerebral hemispheres, which activate and stimulate visual, auditory, and kinesthetic effects. You will remember and manifest what you are writing down. Also, When you teach what you know you will retain something like 93% of the material. Thats the beauty of this site. Having somewhere to read and write, and share your thoughts-get feedback and debate, really dirves the principles and concepts into your mind. Thinking like a pro poker player then becomes easier and then we all begin to manifest the results of winning players (its a raining cash alleluha, its a raining cash, Gloria Gaynor. I think?).

Cool topic. Lata, Michael
