Block bet on the flop

In what situation would you want to make block bets on the flop. I've been watching a pro playing online and he's talking about making block bets with good made hands. I think he's doing it so that his opponents can't put him on a weak hand when he bets small with a weak hand, not sure though.

I block bets in order to get into a bidding war with the raiser and to get rid of the weaker players especially if I'm on the button.
