Sort of starting off with taking poker seriously at the micro cash games. I've been playing 10NL full ring for the most part, but it seems that most people agree higher BB/100 rates can be gotten from 6-handed games. They also seem to be a place where you learn more quickly (?).

So my main question is this: is it worth it to start focusing on playing 6handed right now or should I wait until I'm playing some slightly higher stakes? Is the profit potential difference that noticeable at such low stakes or does it vary by limit?

6-max is a hell of a lot more fun than full ring. Plus you get into more marginal situations which should accelerate your learning

6 max is more aggressive. You wont be running into tables full of nits. More action means more edge. You also get to play a lot more hands per table.

However you'll most likely find the number of tables you can profitably play at the same time at 6max compared to FR will be a lot lower.

Try them both, pick whichever you like best.

Cool. Tinkering with 6-max atm and it's fun. I don't really anticipate going beyond 4 tabling anytime soon, so 6-max is probably more suited to that.

I was mainly curious about how difficult it is to learn each game and whether adjusting to the differences is something you can expect to do in a matter of sessions (I don't think it is). It's all aimed at optimizing my learning at this early stage, eventually we all want to learn every poker game there is, right? :D

Nah, I just don't want to learn stud, 5-card draw, and others I forgot now...because I don't like them :))

I don't think it's that much different, read somewhere that you can think of 6max as full ring with the first 3 (or 4) positions taken out, and the vice-versa also holds true.

Probably the players are more passive in full ring though, regardless of position - or I should say, in every position

Stick with FR. Multi tabling is easier therefore your $/hr will be higher.

Your 6max winrate might be 1-2BB more than FR, but the fact that you can add more tables playing FR than 6-max cancels this out.

I agree with Stu. I will add that when you do decide to start at 6max, do these two things:

1. download the 6max guide posted way back when on 2+2
2. drop down in stakes

It's a much faster game, it's much more aggressive, and the players are generally that much more terrible. The problem is that the variance is so much higher and you could easily go 70k hands (as a winning player) without making a dime outside of rakeback.

Stick with FR for now, and dip your toe into 6 max at a later time, at a lower limit game is my advice...

I think you can make a lot more money faster but the games are a lot more aggressive and I have found less dead money 6 handed then full ring games

interesting info. My foray into 6-handed has been short, but mixed. I made a lot of big play errors in my second session (only some 300 hands) which has caused my overall 6-handed experience to be break-even.

It seems beatable but given my BR I probably would have to drop a limit to really get a handle on it. So thanks to the above few, will stick with FR for a while...try to get the BR for maybe 50NL before tickling 6-man again.
