I've noticed more and more, there are players that bet wierd amounts on a consistant bases. What is the point in bettin 1,999 why not just bet 2,000. You have to type in 1,999 you can use the slider bar for 2,000. There are times where I'll bet the exact amount of a players stack to put him all in, but I don't do it all the time. I have noticed on PS that if you bet wiered amounts, it makes your stack look bigger, that is the only reason I can see people do this. However, if people are trying to confuse you or trip you up with how much they bet, then why are they doing it every time they bet? It just drives me nuts, I don't see the point in doing it all the time. I can see why you would do it once in awhile though. Any thoughts?

Below, not a real good example, but an example non the less. This guy never bets a normal amount, what's the difference between 600 and 675?

sometimes i do too

i also bet weird amounts too. Say that i have 4,592 chips. I will bet 292, so i have an even amount of 4,300. I do not do it often at all, just little things i do on occasions. Yes, i agree maybe it is because it makes the stack look bigger, but i think more people look at the call button instead of the stack width and height. So, i guess i'm clueless as to why others bet weird amounts

Well in this example there is a difference, but I like to do odd amounts in tourneys, yesterday I think I raised 200 to 666 lol. I've heard one explanation that people have a hard time reacting to it and knowing what a regular raise size would be and basically just throws one more thing to throw off other players. Personally I don't do that much when I'm taking it seriously, I'll mostly raise 2.5x preflop and with big blinds like this at least increments of like 25. But I do know some very good tourney players do that so there has to be some merit to it lol.

i dont think it is a big deal when people do this. I mean i see 1,999 as 2,000 anyway. Its the same thing in B+M's when people bet with many small denomination chips instead of two or three larger denomination chips.

I think the point of betting odd amounts (i do it a bit more often now) is to confuse people and make them think "why did he bet like that?" You introduce some uncertainty and it increases their chance of making a mistake.

After going back and reading more of the comments I think spore might have the answer:p

it threw me off once i was 7 tabling the $1.10 45 mans and some guy bet a weird amount like 537 or something along those lines. And since i was multi tabling i didnt really look at his chip stack.
I thought he was all in because of the weird bet so i called hoping to catch a card and than relized he had more chips than me. :)

I've seen the odd amount betting more frequently. Usually something like 222 or 444 etc. Don't know why. Seems kinda silly to me:)

That is the point of it right there - it drives some opponents nuts. ;)

It is not a technique I use myself, but I have seen it advocated by at least one pro precisely because it can annoy the opponent, and an annoyed opponent may think less clearly and make an error.

It's just another tactic to get in your head. I'm also seeing more players using their full time limit on every hand. It tends to provoke at least one player every table.

I've seen it used alot, and to me it just screams "donk". I often find that player will only bet weird amounts when raising in late position to steal blinds. for example raising 122 on the button when blinds are 25/50 to hide the fact that its barely a min-raise. I just pay close attention to betting amounts, and often resteal when people steal with odd bets.

On an old website I used to play at, it allowed you to put decimals after bets, for example 888.75 chips, or 55.5, and I would drive people nuts making bets with decimals like that :)

I like what I heard on a poker podcast the other day. A pro mentioned it and said people feel it tilts people and confuses them, but in reality they're just dorks that think it's funny.

^^^This^^^ is the biggest reason people use strange bets, I for one don't use strange bets often unless it's against these players.
If you notice players using these strange betting patterns, use the same strategy against them.
I find when throwing the same strategy at them confuses them as much if not more.

In short, don't tilt but have fun using the same betting pattern against them, so try it and you'll find out what I mean.

It serves no real purpose as far as I'm concerned...If someone bets 296 at me, I don't think about why, I just treat it the same as if they bet 300. I think people believe it will throw you off, kind of like how some people will criticize you through chat, but only an inexperienced player would ever let it get under their skin.
