I was re-reading Harrington on Hold em part 1 the other day and ran across a section that has had an immediate impact on my game. I though I would share the concept with you. Many times while playing in a tournament you may hit a hand and have the nuts. When this happens a new player will very often move all in only to have his or her opponent fold. This is a mistake. When deciding what to bet you should be asking yourself "Is this bet +ev or -ev?" Now if you have the nuts then any bet is +ev but ... could you make a bet that is even higher +ev. for instance...you hit your boat on the river but the card that hit also put a possible flush on the board. You have the nuts and are reasonable sure your opponent has the flush. You both have considerable stacks in front of you in relation to the blinds. If you move all in it is not very likely that your opponent will call so how much should you bet. I would bet about 1/3 of the pot here....my reasoning is that it gives your opponent 4-1 odds to call(he almost has to call for those odds in tournament play) plus that size bet shows weakness to the inexperienced player....not strength. An inexperienced player might read into the bet a good but weak hand like a set and then move over the top with his flush only to find out that you had the nuts. What do you guys think?

The bet size in a situation like that is going to be read/image dependent. if you have been very aggressive lately stealing pots, then c-bet like you were stealing again and hope that he is going to be calling or reraising you thinking you are holding rags.

The main issue is how to get the most chips into the middle of the table and there are a lot of factors that go into making the correct sized bet.

sure that works sometimes but like steve said , it's about the read you have on the person . preflop , flop and turn bets and calls , usually tell you what he will do. a good player isn't going to get to crazy with a flush when a pr is on the board but many many other players refuse to lay a flush down no matter what you bet.so.... who knows.

Yes, I do believe you are correct with the 1/3 pot bet while holding the nuts but may I interject this too. To get one to call or raise this bet you need a standard on timing here. While folding, checking, or raising. Try to take the same amount of time while making these dicissions. This will keep your opponent off guard and let them think they actually have the best hand here.
