After playing poker seriously for a number of years, I want to try and grind my way up to a real stake. I play live 1/3. I'm starting off at 1/3 because I don't have a big enough BR for 2/5. If I did I would start there, I'm really a 2/5 player. I am trying to determine how large my bankroll needs to be. I can dedicate anywhere from 3000 to 5500. I'd like to start off on the lower end but I also want to make sure I have enough of a BR to make a serious go. I typically buy in for 400 (you can buy in up to half the big stack) but I'm thinking of taking that down to 300 so I can have more buyins. I definitely feel like I can't go lower than that - I hate playing short stack poker. I'm a big stack player. I know the conventional wisdom on how many buy ins but I was hoping to hear from folks with experience. Let me emphasize I want to make a serious go of grinding up levels, not just weekend recreation.

Try play at more tables in one time, try different stakes if you play cash games only. I dont play cash games much I prefer tournaments and sng which (in my opinion) helps more to get better skills :)

I would suggest 6k for 1/3 and 10k for 2/5 with buy ins of $300 and $500 respectfully. I like the 5% rule as it gives you room for variance.
By bankroll i'm talking liquid cash readily available, not that you have to bring the whole roll with you to the casino.

I typically play 1/3 and bring 4 buy ins of $300 with me. I have a separate bank account that is used only for poker (actually my wife loves this idea cause she know i'm not going to loose the house so to speak). I do have a bank card that allows access to cash should i feel the need for more while at the casino. However, If were to loose all four buy ins I think its time to pack it in and call it a day

It depends on a few different factors, like game quality, your skill level and style, your ability to replenish your BR if you bust, how much of your BR you spend on other things like bills, expenses, vacations, etc.

Assuming you have a nice sample size and you are beating 1/3, you shouldn't need more than 10-12 BI for 1/3 if you're not loose-aggro or spending your profit.

I would recommend shot-taking 2/5 when you get about 10 BI ($5k), but I'd suggest dropping back down to 1/3 if/when you hit $3k again. As you work your way up through the stakes you can adjust your shot-taking and BR requirements accordingly.

YOUR BANK ROLL SHOULD NEVER BE USED TO PAY BILLS OR EXPENSES!!!!!!!
IF YOUR gambling WITH BILL AND EXPENSE MONEY YOU NEED TO STOP NOW!!!!

If you get up and you want to take some cash from your bankroll that's fine, but if you need it for bills/expenses time to reevaluate your gambling.

I suggest that you should have at least 100 buy ins of what you want to play in order to practically delete variance, so if you want to play 2/5 you should have 50K, and 30K for 1/3. With 5K you can play 0,25/0,50

Sounds great in theory, but I will guarantee that very few players playing $1/$3 NL on a regular basis have a bank roll of anywhere near 30K. Including myself, my Br was around $5800 untill two nights ago when I had the worst poker night of my life and dropped $1100 in about 4hrs at $1/$3 nl, so now I'm sitting with a br of about $4700 and will probably sit out a few weeks to reset my mind set.

What do people think of starting out with a $100 bank roll? I am pretty new to the online poker I started with Free roll money won 2 dollars. Then I turned that into 90 dollars in about 2 hours and then lost it all in a bad beat 4 of kind, losing to a better 4 of a kind. Do i really need a huge bank roll like you are all saying?

For online I would suggest, playing with 5% or less of your bank roll. So if you want to play .10/.25 Nl buy in is usually $25, therefore you would need $500. For a $100 BR you should be buying in for $5 so you should be playing .02/.05 NL . This would of prevented you losing your whole $90 BR on 1 hand.

100bb is the amount you want in your stack if you play a 100bb max game. Per game.

Play SNG, there are not too much people, you have more opportunitys to win, its more rentable... i loose more money when i play tournements with a lot of people, or cashgame (the worst). When i play SNG i always win 2 of 4 sng.
