re: Poker & Beginning Bankroll - Thoughts?
It depends on a few different factors, like game quality, your skill level and style, your ability to replenish your BR if you bust, how much of your BR you spend on other things like bills, expenses, vacations, etc.
Assuming you have a nice sample size and you are beating 1/3, you shouldn't need more than 10-12 BI for 1/3 if you're not loose-aggro or spending your profit.
I would recommend shot-taking 2/5 when you get about 10 BI ($5k), but I'd suggest dropping back down to 1/3 if/when you hit $3k again. As you work your way up through the stakes you can adjust your shot-taking and BR requirements accordingly.
