Hello CC members,
I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions for a good situation to call people on their bluffs. I was thinking a situational kind of advice, and why you thought to do it (as all good advice should). I would like to snap off a bluff everyonce in while, but I always play the cards in my loose games, as they'll call my bluff, stay in with near anything, chase. But I do play with other decent tight and tricky individuals once in a while, but I try not to butt heads as it easier on my BR to just avoid them all together. I realize it has to be a semi-solid player with the semi bluff used, and be able to fold his losing hand, not chasing draws with out odds. It just seems that when you don't really hit the flop, and you don't think he hit either, and he wouldn't be chasing but he semi-bluffs, things get difficult. Maybe if he has won a couple pots without showing, call him out on his bluff? Even if you lose he may not try to semibluff you off next time because of calling him down. Is this the best strategy, sucking it up once and calling him down, or semi bluff reraising when feeling the proper time? Are those my only defenses against solid bluffers?

I would say to beat a bluff would be to have the nuts or close enough to the nuts (the best hand). This gives you the confidence to out play the bluffer. Maybe even stringing him along.

I guess if you don't have the nuts - then it would be smart to play as if you have the nuts - as far as confidence goes anyways.

With this being said. Playing the hand like your just milking him and when he raises you reraise with double what he raises (on the turn or river). This usually gets their attention and if he is bluffing then some times they will fold. If he is good though he will reraise your reraise probably. This style of play will test your courage, but can be really lucrative, I'm sure.

Not my style though I have seen it happen. Too much stress - I'll just wait to trap the bluffer with a solid hand.

The only way I have found to be satisfied with winning againist someone that bluffs alot is patience because I allow them to get under my skin and I had to change that.

How do we make money playing poker? By making fewer mistakes than the other guy. Up to at least 50nl, people make so many large mistakes outside of bluffing that pure bluff catching is unnecessary and probably unprofitable.

fwiw, the way to make money catching bluffs is by getting really good at hand analysis and understanding how different villain types typically play various situations. Complex topic. Look at ChuckTs 10k post on ring game play in golden archives for a beginning to a discussion regarding villain types.
