I've been having a really bad downswing the last 3 days. The first day I lost 50$ and called it a day. I made 1 mistake that I changed, and the second day I lost 200 due to calling raises with AQ and KQ only to fold when the flop would hit 2 2 3 and somebody would have the 2. Today I lost 100 to a 5$ straddle on the button. Him being on my right side I called 5$ with JJ knowing he'd raise to protect his straddle. He raises to 15 and I call. The flop comes 9 10 2. He goes all in and I call to only get busted by aces. I started with a small bankroll and have lost it all. I don't understand what I'm doing wrong.
There's a lot going on here. As others said it could just be variance and bad luck (which esp live can feel like it lasts a while as we're only seeing maybe 30-40 hands an hour). $50 is nothing at $1/2 live but it's good you realized something was tilting you and you took a break. The $200 loss, it happens but I'm concerned as to why we're calling large raises with AQ and KQ preflop at $1/2 live. Maybe in late position I'd consider calling a 2-8x BB raise with those hands, maybe even up to 9-15x BB raise call with them suited but definetly not getting involved in what sounds like 20x the BB worth of raises pre flop...we're defintely running into hands like AA-QQ seeing that kind of action preflop. Fold pre there. Good fold on flop but you could've saved a ton by folding preflop to big raises.
Good read on the straddle, lots of straddlers live def raise when it comes back to them but with JJ knowing that straddlers will raise preflop with a wide range, why are we flat calling the raise? With JJ against a straddle raise I'm re-raising to $45-50 to see where we're at. On flop, if he shoves , we've got to consider the straddler is wider ranged anyways and so a set is possible or two pair so definitely at 1/2 live not calling an all in with JJ unless there's a J on the flop unless I'm certain the villian will aggro shove with junk like Q10 or A10 there. Bad call on your part. Be prepared to lose, it happens...a lot.
I'm not sure if I should quit poker or maybe build my bankroll up a bit more. I can't tell if I'm a bad poker player or I've just gotten unlucky these past few days. I started 1/2 no limit with 50$ built it up to 400 and now I'm down 600
Could be a mix of both. If you like poker, like others are saying consider studying/reading up more and maybe play some micro stakes online. You can see a ton of hands online for cheap. Lots of us play online and live and I'll say without a doubt that being able to play both online and live helps one's game. You built $50 to $400 live ? That's just luck. Down $600? That's only 3 buy ins. I've been playing live in
casinos for about a year off and on while playing online too. I've had nights at live $1/2 where I've turned $200 into $900 and had nights where I couldn't hit a flop to save my life then get a hand and get sucked out on by a 2 outer in $1000 pots to go down $600 in one hand. Ask around here, others have even bigger bad beat stories. Don't sweat the small losses and if losing $200 at $1/2 live really gets you..you need to play with friends at home or play micros online until you can grind or save some money you're ok with burning. Whenever I do play live I bring 2 bullets (2 buy ins at 100BBs so $200 a buy in) which means you need to be ok with losing a couple hundred in a night there and set a tolerance loss (for me it's 1-2 buy ins live right now, for others might be 3-4 or 5 or 6).
I know for a fact if I played 1000 hands that I'd end up making more money then I started with but that's assuming I have a huge bankroll. I make the right moves and when I have a good hand I value bet correctly but I guess I played scared due to a small bankroll
Not a fact. Not trying to be sarcastic or a jerk, but 1000 hands is nothing. We can see 1000 hands 2-3 hrs multi tabling online. Live? That's about 30 hours of play. Sometimes we run like god and do well in a few hands, other times we can't hit flops or have hands hold up on rivers for endless hands. But you say maybe you're playing scared? Maybe. But you're also saying you value bet correctly and people still get there right? That's good. Make em pay. But your earlier post indicates you aren't making the right moves and that''s costing you.
ATC = Any Two Cards. Meaning ATC play is when you see people who "didn't come here to fold" and play a ton of hands.
Chaviki ive been playing for 6 years.
Live? Online? Home games? Do you track your sessions using a spreadsheet or
App? Are you up overall? Down overall? Breakeven? What's your hourly? If you've been playing $1/2 live for 6 years you would have seen well over 1000 hands and would likely be at least a small winner if you say you're making the right moves.
Even i am not cash player,i think you need at least 20 buy in bankrolls each stake..so if you play 1/2 no limit..you needed at least 4.000$ to play..thats why i told you that you used very agressive bankroll management, even i understand that its the lowest stakes of your casino..
Eh live is different. It's hard for a lot of players to get the capital to set aside $4K in one swoop for live poker. Also there's less hands, it's mostly full ring, and many people don't play more than a few times a month live. All that together probably good to have least $1600 or so ready to dedicate to just $1/2 live then build it up with winnings over time.
