Yikes,

I have many holes in my game in which I am trying to fill. Im starting over by working though areas which I have been ignoring (based on complete confusion), doing some serious reading online and through books but I have a major issue (poker basics) on POT odds and HAND ODDS. I hate to hash over this, as Im sure it had been discussed time and time again, but here goes anyway.

pot odds - HAND ODDS

I have hit a major brain block here and I am looking for any help. Thanks in Advance.

HAND ODDS
I think I have a handle on calculating the number of outs I have left in the deck to hit/improve my hand using the "outs times 2 plus 2" method.

Here is where I am completely losing it!

POT ODDS

I am completely lost here, and I know alot of folks may get a good chuckle out of this and thats ok, but please, in between the chuckles can someone explain a simple equation to show % to call with.

My understanding :)confused: which certainly is confused at this point) is if your POT ODDS are greater than your HAND ODDS this is a call you should make?

Im looking for the math here as this is where I get confused.

Thanks

Have you read the articles yet?

If not, definitely read them; they've been put in very simple terms so anyone can grasp the concepts. If they still don't help then just search for old threads similar to this one. There have been dozens with very good explanations in many of them.

also try a basic hold 'em book (if hold 'em is your game). Phil Gordon's Little Black Book or Lee Jones Winning Low Limit Hold 'Em. Or Angel Largay's book. They all have excellent thorough and yet simple explanations of these concepts. Largay's book would be good for you because of the problems at the end of each section. If you can do the problems you know you are understanding the material

thanks for the reply's.

the more I read the more confused I get.

after writing my post I continued to search for POT ODDS found a few sites, read up on them, tried to understand there example's and sadly enough, still in a major state of confusion.

I may have myself on brain overload as I am trying so hard to understand this concept. What I have found is Im trying to grind at low limit tables and struggle to figure out if I should be calling or folding mid-level hands after the flop on a draw. (know that probably sounds a little sick) Trying to figure out if I have the correct amount of odds to make the call......but not sure how to figure out my pot odds I panic and either chicken out or make alot of dumb calls not knowing and hoping for the best.......YIKES
after reading that Im freaking out...NEED TO FIX THIS HOLE AND FAST.

THANKS AGAIN

to find out how good your chanses are o hit what you are drawing for you take your number of outs multiply them with the numbers of cards you can hit them with, then multiply that number with 2, thats not excactly correct, but very cose. So an example:
you have 2 suited cards in the whole, the flop gives you 2 more cards of your suit so you have 4 to a flush. to find your % chance of hitting your last card to a flush you multiply the number of outs (in this case 9) with 2 since there is 2 more cards to come(turn & river) and then again multiply that number with 2 again, that gives 36% chance of winning
learned this in full tilt's section "tips from the pro's, worth a look)

As has been alluded to: Top right corner of this site has some "tabs," one of which is "Strategy Articles." Check it out, you might find something useful there. Yours truly has written a few of them so if there's something you feel is hard to grasp in how they explain stuff, be sure to let me know.
