Hi

So my regular live game has a few new members and one of them is a reasonably good LAG. By "reasonably good" I mean that although he loves to raise pre-flop (especially when he is first to the pot), he also shows the ability to fold post-flop/turn and not be a total maniac. I've seen him suck out on a few hands, but typically, when he is in at showdown he has either a good hand, or a good combo draw. He has been cleaning up over our last few games.

Pride requires me to say that he has not taken my money:) - but although I have been winning along side him, he has been winning more than I have, and it is making think about how to adjust.

In past games, I have largely stayed out of his way. When I have legit cards, I three bet him or re-raise him post flop, and he has always folded.

That is fine, and is probably why he does not have my money, but it strikes me that I am kind of playing into his game by waiting for good cards before I push back. If I were him, I would keep right on LAGing, fold to 3-bets etc., and simply keep stealing many small pots plus a few big ones.

How do others adjust to LAG players (assume that they are reasonably good and not total maniacs who will call you down 100% of the time with air)?

A. tighten and trap
B. loosen a bit and push back
C. loosen a lot
D. other?

Thanks.

just me, but a lot of times I will overjam and large pairs and usually have lag dominated if they call. if they fold its just easy money. these spots may not come up often but are very profitable. most 4 or 5 bets will get flatted and allow him to see a draw or donk pair...

Lags like to be the aggressor, so by 3betting or re raising otf you may aswell have your hole cards face up........if it was me I would be a total station IP and check/call OOP....

if there's fish in your games then focus on winning against them.

generally you two should be staying out of each others way, so we're assuming he had the same thought process if he has respect for your game.

I'd just play straight up vs him to be honest, playing mind games where you don't need to is gonna net you a ton of variance and if he's better than you, lose you money.

its deffo more +ev to just go for the fish imo.

but to answer your question, LAGs are aggresive with the lead and normally tighten up vs further aggression from other parties so that'd be your best bet, but play back with hands with equity please.

Like OMG9K said, there is no need to go to war with him. Perhaps the reason he is winning more is because he is exploiting the fish more often than you are. Stick to what you know when you play against him, and avoid anything fancy, but you might make more by adjusting vs the fish. Isolate more IP, if a fish limps and the LAG isolates, consider 3-betting OTB with KQs if you know the fish will call with worse.

It may just be that your overall game could do with a few tweaks to net you more profit vs the fish.

IMO it's not a bad idea to consider dealing with the better regs at your table. You're going to take the rec players money anyway, so why not? My player pool is rather small, so I absolutely have to take on the regs even while I'm game selecting as well as I can.

So, what to do? Consider his weaknesses, places he's unbalanced, and attempt to exploit him. That, or just stay out of his way and go for lower variance. The choice is yours.

Those guys are the hardest to deal with. Even harder than the regular TAGs. A good LAG is a cameleon and you can only judge him by his betsize patterns not the usual stats because he will not pay off as the fish do.
Better keep them at your right and squeeze when there is a fish involved . Simply you do not want them in the pot when you play marginal hands. They play like a fish pre and like a TAG after.

I think you either do what you are doing and stay out of his way or if hes never calling 3 bets. start making them a little bit more. I used to always wanna raise almost every pot and just win a bunch of small pots and then get more value for big hands because i seem wreckless. the only thing that would make me change that is if 1 guy would keep 3 betting.i would then leave him alone.

Thanks all. "focus on the fish" is great advice. FYI, that is what I did the other night and worked out well. The guy one to my right somehow loved to limp to me, call my raise, and fold to my continuation bet over and over and over again. I think he called my post flop bet once, then bet the river and I insta-folded. He got upset and turned over kings ;)

Hmm. Now it sounds like I am the LAG.
