I'm typically trying to isolate with 99-JJ if i can otherwise seeing it cheap for a set. When isolating and flopping the overpair how are people approaching this? People will often stack off with draws or top pair but then it's difficult to get away from the people who have hit a set or had higher pairs. Once I've isolated raised the spr is often small and hard for me to fold. Am I misplaying or is it just the nature of these hands?

I have the same problem. Usually if you've isolated and make Cbet and they call usually they've connected with the flop in some way and you should be more cautious with your next move

As is often the case, position is crucial. You have 99 and it is a 2 4 8 flop. If you are out of position it is often best to play the pot small. You can check call twice here and if you get 3 barrelled on the river you are either beat or your opponent has brass stones. In position you have all kinds of options. I will only mention one and leave you to think of the others. Let's say you are bet into on this 2 4 8 flop then you can raise and most likely win right there or know that you are in trouble if called or 3 bet. I know it often happens that you get these hands UTG and that makes life tough. I guess my answer to your question is that in position raise to isolate and out of position try to play a multi way pot cheap.

If u control the pot size you can call a bluff or a small bet with over pairs

That's the nature of those middle pairs. Without a set, they can be really difficult to play (and get to showdown if you're out of position)

Open raise, but calling a bet or raising really depends on your position, the action, and who your opponents are. Just remember that post flop all you usually have is one pair & you cant go too far wrong.

Also, the average winning hand in holdem is 2 pair. If you cant beat that in a multi way pot, do not put much money in.

Multiple replies here, and OP has given no specifics.

Cookie cutter poker advice?

I agree with IPlay. Give us specific hands. I don't do cookie cutter advice (anymore, I used to before I knew what I know now).

You need to call the Casino and tell them the dealer messed up because Jacks full of Deuces beats Deuces full of Aces

You do not always have to go to all after you put a lot on the flop with these couples . You can play a check and see what will happen next .

My biggest problem with those hands is another pair in hand bigger than mine which happens in 80% of the times..!

I would play those hands in the right position. Try to get your value when hitting sets or overpair. If there comes an A,K,Q on the board try to lay down more often.

Some of this set over set situations on pokerstars are a little questionable to me, but hey, it is poker, but stil.

Also if you have a pair of nines in hands and the flop is 2 8 7, in my opinion you need to make a large bet to make sure that your opponent who might hold A K doesn't get a free or cheap card on the turn or the river, just play aggressively.

Never certainly not overestimate the capabilities of the enemy, but in any case should not be underestimated himself

maybe youver commit to this hands? after all 99 is just a pair. If you play a fish he can flot and catch a wierd set/dro him self, if you play a nit you loose money shoving into him not willing to belive that he's got an overpair/dro. The mid hands will not call you off any how so it's hard to value bet.
