Something I've noticed is a lot of people taking their tournament game to a cash table, when in fact, if it's a 6 handed game, one can open more pots - hands like Q-10os

Anyone agree/disagree?

I don't completely understand the question, but I think I get the gist of what you're asking.

It all depends on play style. Tight players will only play premium hands, loose players will play more. In a tournament there's not always time to wait for a premium hand before the blinds catch up with you, but cash games stay the same regardless, the blinds never increase so waiting for premium hands it's easier and you expect to see stronger hands.

I think that you've seen loose players at the table who are playing a higher range of cards, and that would be regardless of number of players at the table. That said though, it is also easier to bluff against less players so 6 handed is better for playing marginal hands

Wow that's pretty solid advice haha thanks.
I am an overall tight player, so when I do sit down, I usually play marginally to get to some show downs and after that I wait to get a monster.

6 max is 24% while 9 max is 18% tightness. Optimal

Ya true, I guess a real advanced player will be looking for those 76% edges or 82% if 9 handed...
I guess things to consider are similar between tournaments and cash games, like the different style of playing early tournament with a ton of blinds vs late tournie, where stacks are shorter and every spot counts.

Indeed.
WHen you play 6-handed you have to play more hands.
Something I have a little bit trouble with :)

Are you winning... doesn't seem like a winning recipe

I am winning, and it's because I play tight-aggressive. You can say it doesn't sound like a winning strategy, but when you look at the whole strategy, like stealing blinds to keep up with the rake, and then the table plays their loose game, and they don't expect it: when you come in with a 4-bet 2.5x the 3-bet. It's a bluffy looking bet, so it's easier to get paid off if the table is loose.

It's actually understanding what a winning percentage is in terms of the actual cards. Aiming for 24% variance instead of a 65%-35% situation like draws usually have that big of a disadvantage on the flop against top set.

At this point of view I agree. But there are some exceptions.

For a beginner player would advise 9max. Because the novice will play a narrow range at first

I think that doesn’t create a big difference on your game. Also sure if you are not comfortable playing more hands , 9max might be better for you

Yes, I agree that if you are taking your 9 hand game to a 6 handed game you will have to open your range a little more. Your Q 10 example is very general though, your range in the 6 handed game should be much wider... But thats just my game. There are many different ways to play well, I just tend to find the most aggressive and fun route.

Good Luck!

keep in mind that your are changing 2 things:
1) MTT versus cash game
2) 9 handed versus 6 handed
Most likely you'll find that the difference bewteen the players has a larger influence on the range you play than the combination of the two aspects changed.

Yes my statement is "correct" as it can be. Should not have used the word optimal.

With this topic I came to the following question, what really differs in our range opening a table with 6-max or 9-max? Even a 3-handed?

as I play only with strong cards in cash game I prefer table with 9 players, so the chance to take more profits with weak hands from opponents is greater.

6 hand is 6 players at a table, 9 handed is 9 players etc...

OT: For 9 handed I would value cards with greater versatility (ability to hit straights/flushes/sets such as suited connectors) due to the fact that you will be in less heads up pots and more multi-way pots. I would value cards like Q9 less in 9 handed due to the above reasons as flopping a pair doesn't guarantee you the equity multi-way like it does heads-up.

I fully agree. In a table with 6 players it is necessary to play looser, because the blinds arrive fast in you, so if you wait a lot they will swallow you.

In my opinion, if you play MTT, then of course 9max is optimal. It is possible to take your own combination longer. and more trenches that your hand will be the best.

9max and 6max ranges are not much different. Take your 9 handed opening range/chart and cutoff the first 3 spots and boom you have a 6max open range (in a nut shell)
