Hi, I'm mostly a 1 table SNG player and 10 max cash player. I'm playing at the really low limits right now and working my way up. .05/.10 cash, 2$ SNG, etc.,

I'm doing pretty well in the 10 max and 2$ SNG tables, but my losses trying to play 6 max ate up all my winnings playing the other two. I don't really have a whole ton of hands in my hand history for 6 max yet, but I feel like I'm probably doing something wrong. There was a week of really bad beats, but I think my raising standards preflop are still not very solid.

What hands would you guys raise at a 6 max table?
I was basically raising premium hands early, and basically any mid ace, any two face cards, any pocket pairs except twos and threes, any mid to high suitted connectors, and any high suitted semi connectors (kjs) from late position.

The simplest way of looking at it is as a 10 or 9-max game with all the players knocked out except the last 6.

Don't stress over the difference too much. There are definitely different standards in each, but don't let that make you think that they're big enough that you can beat one game but not another.

This question depends on position and more on what type of style that you play. If you are in late position you are going to raise with weaker starting hands than if you are under the gun.

Admittedly you should loosen up your starting hand requirements for a 6 max table, I cannot tell you what those hands are because I don't know how loose/tight you play. It also depends on how the other players at the table are playing.

Sorry to not really answer your question, but it really does depend. If you are just starting out I would stick to only raising premium hands pre-flop.

Ok im gonna stab at the problem y u can profit in 10 max but not 6. I think ure a player that understands how to play preflop poker and u understand the gap concept and therefore can do very well getting ure money in the best in a 10 seater where u are almost always get a call when betting. This tight approach will work for the most duration of a 10 seater and then ud get to a level where it sounds like u do welljust by stealing the blinds when it becomes shorthanded.

Although this play can work quite well in 10 seaters u will not get the same result in a 6 max table. In a 6 max table the difference is obviously is that it starts with 6 ppl and ussually pays out top 2. This means a lot of things, in particular :
you get a good amount of time to gain an understanding of your opponents and u can pick out the styles of play and change ure play accordingly. Because in 6 max, preflop play i believe is not near as important as post flop play because if u play a tight game chances are you will make very little from your hand (unless u are playing tight against superaggressive opponents).

You will also be involved in a lot more hands so those rules that u followed from the books where it says raise only with these cards in this position will have to be changed and u must be able to play most hands in all the positions.

Another important factor that u need to take into account is that 2nd is ussually not good enough and u will only make a good profit if u can come 1st much more often than u come 2nd. So a strong HU game is a essential in 6max because of the prize jump.

I dont want to go on for too long but ill just add one more tip .when u get round to the last 3 or so in the late stages it shouldn't have to be all in or fold situations. Once u develop a strong post flop play u need to defend your BB so ppl dont steal your blinds and it means u can call instead of always raising preflop to mix it around. Because thats what 6 max ussually is.. a lot more postflop play where it will greatly favours the stronger player who can outplay his opponents after the flop.

hope this helps mab consider playing more HU games to become better in that aspect and if u want to move up in limits only move up in 10max where u no u can profit and wait till u develop a greater sense of posflop play in 6 max before u move up there.
